West Haverstraw is a small town located in upstate New York. The population was 3,631 at the 2010 census. West Haverstraw is part of the Oneonta-Haverstraw-Latham, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now West Haverstraw was John Sweetman, who arrived in 1788. He and his wife Susannah built the first house on the current site of the town. In 1812, James Aitken purchased land in what is now West Haverstraw from John Sweetman for $1,000. Aitken renamed the area "Haverstraw" after his father's birthplace, Homefield in England. Haverstraw experienced a rapid growth following its incorporation as a village in 1868. By 1890, it had over 1,000 residents and had developed a commercial district that included four blocks of downtown. The village continued to grow through the late 19th century until World War I when it declined due to population loss and economic decline. In 1925, however, Haverstown successfully challenged Village status to become an independent incorporated town with its own government and fire department; this event helped revive interest in western New York villages which were losing their appeal because of high taxes and limited access to education and job opportunities outside their borders. Through restoration efforts during the 1960s & 1970s several buildings within Haverstown's historic district were restored including: mill (1813), school (1898), whitesmith shop (1907), post office (1928), jail (1936) & garage/warehouse (1968). Today most notable landmark still standing is 2-story Gothic Revival style stone courthouse built 1865 by Fayetteville architect Augustus Biddle which houses New York State District Court.

West Haverstraw, New York is a small town located in the Town of West Haverstraw on Long Island. It was originally settled by Dutch settlers in 1614, and became part of the English colony of New Netherland after it was annexed by England in 1664. The community name originated from a white chestnut tree that grew near the original settlement. The town center is located at 403 Main Street, which was built in 1846 as the first courthouse in the town. The current building replaced an earlier structure built in 1792. The courthouse has been used for various purposes including civil and criminal trials since 1856. In 2008, West Haverstraw voters passed a resolution requesting that the state government rename Independence Hall to "Haven't We All Loved West Point?" In honor of General George Washington, who served as President of America from 1789-1797 and also founded Mount Vernon Province (later Virginia), the motion failed to receive enough signatures to be placed on the ballot. In addition to its courthouse and town hall, West Haverstraw has a library, park, post office, grocery store/cafeteria, convenience store/gas station, doctor's office/daycare/, Veteran's Affairs clinic/center/, fire department/rescue service/, gymnasium/, tennis courts/(1) and (2)), two banks with over $100 million in assets each*, three dozen restaurants*, six dozen retail businesses* (* denotes company or firm which did not participate in 2006 census), one hundred fifty three households* (* denotes household with five or more residents), one thousand four hundred ninety-six businesses*, eleven thousand seven hundred eighty-eight people*(* includes employed individuals only*)
West Haverstraw was a small town in upstate New York, located on the west bank of the Hudson River. It was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1624 and became part of what is now Upstate New York in 1685. The town's name derived from its location on the Haverstraw Heights, east of present-day West Haverstraw. In 1814, during the American Revolution, West Haverstraw residents successfully aided British forces in capturing Fort George at Niagara Falls. The town prospered as a result and quickly developed into an important agricultural center. However, economic depression and overpopulation soon forced the abandonment of many buildings and businesses in the early 21st century. Today, some remnants of both previous eras remain; for example, a number of wooden churches still stand along with several homes dating back to before 1795.
