West Haverstraw is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. The village of West Haverstraw was merged into the town on July 1, 2006. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Haverstraw were Dutch traders and farmers who arrived in 1624. They named the area "Westhaven". The first settler was Nicholas Decker, who arrived in 1646. A school was built in 1787 and a post office was established in 1801. In 1845 John Butterfield founded the Butterfield Railroad which connected with the Erie Canal near Buffalo. In 1861 Mary Chesser married Abraham Lincoln and moved to West Haverstraw; they raised five children there before moving to Springfield, Illinois when Abraham became President of the United States in 1865. In 1874–75 Edward Everett Hale bought land comprising present-day West Haverstraw from Nicholas Decker for $18 per acre (1/4 mile²). After unsuccessfully trying to sell it off piecemeal over many years he developed it into a large farmstead that included rolling hills and streams running through it that still provide an outdoor lifestyle today. He called his property "Hale's Valley" after himself and started naming his farms after American presidents: James Kapp (1881), Grover Cleveland (1893), Warren Harding (1921), Franklin D Roosevelt (1945). In 1907 Mrs. Hale sold her share of the farm to Wm Ladd for $10 per acre ($ ). At this time most of East Aurora Township had been annexed by Rochester as part of their larger merger with other townships in Central New York State under Governor Nelson Rockefeller's administration on October 15, 1909 . Borough president George Fenton decided against annexing West Haverstraw because its size would have made annexation difficult and also because some residents wanted more independence than they felt they had received from Rochester officials since incorporation as part of that larger merger effort four years earlier . By 1912 only 7 percent of east side residents lived within one mile (1 km) of their homes while nearly all west side residents lived within two miles (.6 km) or more away—a distance still relevant today when travel times between these areas are quite long . On October 15th 1909 Western New York statehood occurred followed by annexation by Rochester swallowing much smaller eastern portion including parts of east side residents' home

West Haverstraw, New York is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. It lies along the Mohawk River and is about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Albany. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. West Haverstraw is one of six townships in Sullivan County. The first permanent settler in what is now West Haverstraw was Captain John Smith who arrived around 1712. His cabin was located on the east bank of the Mohawk River opposite present-day East Aurora. In 1715, Colonel James Clinton moved his brigade of troops from Oswego to build Fort Orange on an island in the river near where Smith's cabin had been situated. The fort served as a base of operations for anti-British operations during the American Revolutionary War and later as a military post under British General George Washington during his campaigns against France and Spain in North America. In 1805, two brothers named Nicholas and Michael Slocum purchased land east of present-day West Haverstraw from Ephraim Livingston for $10 per acre (4 hectares). They built a cabin known as "The Slocums" on their farmstead which still stands today and remains one of the most significant landmarks in town. In 1808, they sold their holdings to Isaac Neely for $40 per acre (16 hectares). Neely developed it into what is now known as "Neely's Corners". During the early part of this century there were several attempts by settlers to establishes farms west of present-day West Haverstraw due to its fertile soil and available water resources; however these efforts failed because noone could afford to buy or develop such land. In 1828, Daniel Webster founded Webster's Mills at what is now called "Westport Road" after he became Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of State that year; this marked Webster’s first foray into manufacturing outside Boston proper following his election victory that year. soon afterwards he began purchasing tracts adjacent to current day West Haverstraw for milling purposes which would eventually become known as Webster Farms subdivision; also located here were other mills operated by Webster including Chilcott & Sons flourmill (now demolished), Jonathan Acheson Ives' sawmill (#1), Jno.[?] Hilliard's gristmill (#2) and others until 1902 when all but four were destroyed by fire caused by sparks from an iron pike used at one time for making nails at Webster’s Mills site; those remaining structures are currently used as apartments/residence buildings north side Main Street between First Street & Second Street just southwest corner lot #3 across street from Niagara Falls Hotel complex www .websterhofstallation .com In 1846 Wilder Van Ness established a store at what is now called "Moses Brown Road", located between Third Street & Fourth Street just northwest corner lot #5 across street from Niagara Falls Hotel complex www .wildervannessfarmstead .com The Store continued operation until closing around 1870 due to increased competition from eastern merchants shipping goods downriver with more efficient transportation methods like steamship then via wagon road
