The town was first settled around 1795 and incorporated as a village in 1836. A post office was established in West Haverstraw in 1855, and three years later it became the county seat for Wayne County. In 1898, West Haverstraw merged with neighboring Albion to form what is now called Albion-West Haverstraw-Astonishing Falls Township. In 1954, West Haverstraw separated from Wayne County and became its own independent municipality. The township has since been renamed to West Haverstraw-Havensport Township and its current mayor is Carl Tolfa Jr.. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and (2%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,812 people, 1,711 households, and 1,049 families residing in the town. The population density was 137 people per square mile (60/km²). There were 2,225 housing units at an average density of 73 per square mile (29/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; <1% Pacific Islander; and <1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3% of the population.

The first settlers in what is now West Haverstraw were two families who set out from Albany on October 12th, 1664. They named their new settlement after the fastnesses of Haverstraw and Hastings in England. The first Post Office was established in 1793 and current name honors Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne. West Haverstraw developed slowly until 1825 when it became an Village and then a Town under the guidance of the New York State Legislature. In 1895 it became an incorporated community with a full government by its own Board of Trustees which still governs day-to-day affairs today. In 1898, during the late 1800s and early 1900s many small businesses were started by farmers that had to leave their homes due to lack of market demand for their products or because they couldn't compete with larger farms located further away from major cities like Buffalo or Syracuse. These businesses often continued into the present day as small businesses that offer goods and services to residents of their communities as well as tourists visiting those areas
West Haverstraw was the location of a small, rural town located in upstate New York during the early 1800s. The name "Haverstraw" is derived from the Dutch word "havre" meaning 'to have a farm'; this is also why West Haverstraw is known as a farming and agricultural center. The first settlement in what is now West Haverstraw was established in 1795 by settlers from Kingston and adjacent towns. The town grew rapidly due to the production of milk and other products derived from the land. By 1827, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1847, John Adams conducted an experiment with growing corn on his property which led to increased acreage for agriculture in what is now West Haverstraw. During World War II, many people from West Haverstraw served in the military including Admiral Chester Nimitz who arrived at Roosevelt Island on December 1, 1941 to rest and await orders. In 1957, Dr. Julius Rosenwald donated land that forms today's campus of SUNY-Harmonyville; this donation helped spur development of education within West Haverstrow as well as new businesses and residences near campus. Today, West Haverston has emerged as one of America's most vibrant college towns with its own shopping district and thriving nightlife options
