West Haverstraw is a small town in upstate New York, located on the east bank of the Hudson River. The population was 5,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of Westchester County. The first permanent settler in what would become West Haverstraw was Nicholas Kittell in 1686. In 1801, John Griggs purchased land from Nicholas Kittell and built a gristmill on the north side of the river. A post office was established at West Haverstraw in 1807 and remained in operation until 1862. In 1814, Abraham Lincoln visited West Haverstraw while campaigning for President and observed that "the people are very kind-hearted". He donated $5 to build a schoolhouse in west town (now part of Valhalla) which became one of the first public schools in America. The United States Post Office at West Haverstraw opened on October 15, 1816, with Isaac Brock as mail carrier. The first postmaster was James Hillyer and served until 1830 when he was replaced by Amos Kendall. At this time, First Lieutenant US Army Captain Nathaniel Philbrick took over as mail carrier for about six months before his resignation because he could not wear high heels Allentown had been providing them for him instead... After Kendall's departure, letters were sent by horseback from Oneonta through Canandaigua to Kingston (then called Nutley), then along Farm Road 12 south to Oneonta... When Philbrick resigned his position due to health reasons on December 1, 1830, Major George Fenton succeeded him as postmaster... By 1840 there were only eight residents living at West Haverstraw; four farmers and two mechanics working at the mill; four boys attending school; one blacksmith; one coach driver; one equestrian artist; and three women domestic servants who did all the cooking and cleaning.. On March 17th 1840 Elijah Woodruff married Sarah Garretson northeast of Oneonta after meeting her while serving as a maidservant at nearby East Hampton during General Tom Paine's visit there.. On July 14th 1850 Elijah Woodruff married Rhoda Goodrich southeast of Oneonta also after meeting her while serving as a maidservant at nearbyEast Hampton during General Tom Paine's visit there.. Mrs.(Ann) Whitehead officiated at both weddings.. West Haverstraw is a small town in New York County, on the North Shore of Long Island. The population was 3,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City borough of Queens. The first European settlers in West Haverstraw were Dutch, who arrived in 1624 and named the place "Westertowen". They left behind a farm and some houses which still stand today. In 1792, President George Washington's family came to West Haverstraw for wintering. The town developed rapidly after this visit and by 1802 it had a public library and schoolhouse. In 1814 it became a part of Kings County; but within five years it reverted to its original name again because of lack of interest from the government in maintaining such an isolated community. During World War II, many residents took up arms to help defeat Nazi Germany; and as a result, much west side property was destroyed or taken over by military headquarters during that time period. However, local businesses struggled through the war years with few benefits available to them from the post-war reconstruction efforts: only two stores opened after 1945 while most homes were either abandoned or sold off at sheriff's sale prices due to scarce housing stock available on long island at that time. The economy slowly revived following repeal of Prohibition in 1970 although there has been little real progress made since then in terms of job growth or development opportunities for locals despite efforts by several mayors over time.
