During World War II, many civilians were displaced by Allied bombing raids that destroyed much of downtown Buffalo; some residents relocated to West Haverston where they founded a small business district which still thrives today - Harding House being one example). In recent years there have been efforts to revive portions of downtown west of High Street with plans for a new shopping mall adjacent to Interstate 490/Route 9 southbound Exit 20A but these projects are still stalled due to lack of voter support or funding
