The town's name comes from an original grant by George Washington to James Wright in 1785. Wright named his plantation "West Haverstraw" after his home parish in Kentucky. In 1806, Samuel Morse bought some land east of town and built a house there which became known as Morse Manor. In 1814, he donated two lots in what is now West Haverstraw to the United States government for use as a military reservation. The land served as Fort Erie until 1825 when it was transferred to Canada for military purposes during the War of 1812. In 1827, John D'Angelo founded D'Angelo Copper Mines which became one of the largest copper mines in America. After years of exploration and investment by D'Angelo and his associates, production began at their new mine on an existing estate near modern day White Plains, New York in 1840. continued production led to rename the company D'Angeline Copper Mines later that year when its ownership changed hands multiple times until it was purchased by Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1898 who renamed it Phelps Dodge Mining Company Incorporated (Phelps Dodge) with headquarters located here since 1907 including tenement buildings on Main Street between Park Avenue (now State Route 8) and Maple Streets Historic district). The first post office opened on April 20th 1800; this was followed by West Haverstraw village (1801-1805), then East Haverstraw village (1807-1809), then North Haverstraw village (1810-1811), then South Haverstraw Village (1812-1902). In 1827 Drury erected a stone building opposite today's Post Office which still stands Today's Administration Building houses many departments including: Fairs & Markets Committee; Parks Department; School District #1; School District #2; Library Boardwalk Committee - also includes Community Development Fund Committee Room - and more... On November 15th 1860 Rev A W Albright preached at First Presbyterian Church where he dedicated what would become known as “Albright’s Chapel” This beautiful structure remains standing across from current day Post Office today! Today we enjoy much cultural activity such as chamber music concerts being enjoyed throughout most summers especially Memorial Day weekend Arts & Crafts Festival taking place every other week throughout summertime Theatre productions are staged here regularly local schools offer programs like PreKindergarten through 12th grade while also offering Dual Language classes Spanish/English or French/Spanish taught various days each week guitar lessons are available daily starting at 6am

The current community began to form around 1830 when two families from nearby Atticasettisetti moved to what is now West Haverstraw from Attica. In 1847, Congress passed an act creating the Town of West Haverstraw out of parts of Sullivan and Lewis counties. On April 12, 1850, voters approved a charter for the town which became effective on May 5th. It has since been mired in economic decline with only a few businesses remaining open during most of its history due to competition from larger towns such as Kingston or Utica. Despite this trend however, some vestiges remain of early West Haverstraw including a small schoolhouse and a white oak tree that stands outside City Hall today reminder that despite difficulties there can be beauty too in difficult times
The town of West Haverstraw was established in 1785 by a group of Dutch farmers who emigrated to the New York area. The town grew rapidly, and in 1814 it was incorporated as a village. In 1819, West Haverstraw voted to become part of the newly formed Village of Syracuse. It remained anvillage until 1959 when it became an independent town.
