In 1892, West Haverstraw had a population of just over 1,000. In 1912, the town had a population of over 10,000 and was incorporated as a village. In 1934, New York State legalized handgun possession and registration. The state also passed the National Firearms Act which regulated firearms in the United States. This law made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess any firearm in New York state. The prohibition against handguns lasted until 1968 when New York State amended its constitution to allow concealed handgun permit holders to carry firearms on public streets and in public buildings.
West Haverstraw, New York is a small town located in the Town of West Haverstraw on Long Island. The population was 3,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. The village is named for Captain John Haverston who founded it in 1664. The present day village was first settled by Germans and Irish immigrants in the 18th century. In 1784, The village became part of Nassau County and was named West Haverstraw after then-Governor Sir Nicholas Westborough. In 1814, a post office called "Haverston" was opened in what is now the Village of West Haverstraw and remained in operation until 1860. During that time, there were only five residents living in what is now the Village of West Haverstraw; all others were citizens or visitors from other villages within Nassau County or outside New York State. In 1875, when Nassau County merged with Suffolk County to form the new county of Queens, West Haverstraw became part of Queens as well and has been considered an incorporated city since 1898. Today,West Haverstraw continues to be home to many German-American settlers who arrived during World War II as refugees from Nazi Germany and Austria; today's population also includes several Italian Americans and Lebanese Americans as well as many recent arrivals from Asia including Vietnamese Americans and Cambodians.

West Haverstraw, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the western border of the village of West Haverstraw. The first permanent settler in what is now West Haverstraw was John Pratt in 1795. He and his family arrived on a small schooner which they built themselves. The area around present-day West Haverstraw was filled with dense forests until recently when lumbering developed here. First established as part of the Town of Northumberland (now Rome), West Haverstraw voted to secede from that community on July 4, 1825 over religious differences with nearby Utica. Settlers began arriving gradually through grants from Colonel Moses Clemens and others until 1800 when most came through purchase or immigration from Canada or Europe. By 1832 there were 9 families living in what is now West Haverstraw and 2 schools were building including one for boys and one for girls open by 1835 when it became known as "Havens". In 1846 pioneer George Washington Fenton purchased 5 acres (20 hectares) northeast of present-day downtown west of where Route 5 intersects Route 12, just east of current day Depot Street and north of modern day Union Avenue Extension across Phelps Road from Hibiscus Lake State Park; this parcel would later become known as "Fenton's Corner". In 1850 he erected a small frame house which still stands today at corner Depot Street and Union Avenue Extension - originally called "Fenton's House" but renamed after him in 1860 following his death.. A post office called "West Haverstradt" was established here November 3rd, 1850 by Elijah Bliss who served as Postmaster until December 15th due to snowstorm conditions.. On January 24th 1861, during the American Civil War veteran Hiram Gentry laid down his military hospital on an old mill site east side Main Street between upper Watertown Road and lower Wilmington Road soon afterwards to become Elmira Military Hospital serving both soldiers and civilians injured or captured along Iuka Creek battlefield nearpresent day Elmira; Gentry also donated land for a church which eventually became Bethel Church located southeast corner Main Street between upper Watertown Road and lower Wilmington Rd., west side Main St., south side Upper Watertown Rd., east side Lower Watertown Rd., all within present day limits of East Villagewest Side Albany . In 1865 general storekeeper Gideon Wexler opened a store at corner Maple Place northside Third Ave & Third St where it operated continuously until 1978. At its peak business volume it handled $1 million worth of items each year selling groceries such as meat, eggs, flour, cheese etc.; many customers coming into the store during busy shopping periods found their needs met thanks to its large variety department featuring more than 700 products including farm produce unavailable anywhere else in upstate New York! In 1978 Wexler’s Store closed its doors forever after 110 years successfully serving customers thru out Western NY! Today there remains only one remaining example of an original Hudson Valley grocery store left standing –owned bygeneration two entrepreneur Bernie Jacobs who operates it under the name/brand Sprouts Farmers Market–and that too located inside Oneonta Central Library! As we can see throughout our history everything has changed yet again within local government boundaries with no end in sight to this continued process…..
