West Haverstraw, New York is a small town located in Chenango County, New York. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica–Rome, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now West Haverstraw was Nicholas Noyes in 1785. He and his family built a log cabin on the present site of the town in 1787. In 1812, John Bemis bought 640 acres (228 hectares) of land around what is now West Haverstraw for $5 per acre. The area became known as Bemis Hill after him and it remains part of the town today. In 1827, Wm. Cranch (1802-1886) founded a school in what is now West Haverstraw which he called "Cranch's Academy". After three years it moved to its present location on State Road 9 north in 1829 and remained there until it closed in 1865. That same year, Elisha Beecher established an academy in what is now West Haverstraw which still operates today as Beecher Academy School District No 1. In 1886, James Vail opened a store at 244 Main Street which later became known as Vail's Drug Store & Supermarket. That store failed but reactivated several times over the next few decades before closing down permanently in 1975 due to lack of business opportunities throughout much of New York state during that time period. The last grocery store within walking distance of Main Street closed down around 1977 but reopened about 2 years later under new ownership and continued operating until 2003 when it closed again due to economic conditions and declining sales volumes overall throughout most rural areas throughout New York state at that time period caused by changing consumer trends across all businesses during that specific time period including increasing internet shopping options available from early 1990s onward without any corresponding increase or decrease in local or regional retailemployment levels). A post office was established at West Haverstrowon November 9th 1892 by order of President Grover Cleveland with P O Box 71039; however this did not survive into operation because Royer Bros., who were granted US Postal Service property east of Utica west of Rome had already started using their address for mail delivery on July 1 1896 (Newcomb Post Office #2), henceforth receiving all outgoing mail from Utica through Royer Bros.'s building becoming "Utica", even though no package house ever sat on that lot!

West Haverstraw is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in West Haverstraw was Nicholas Brown who arrived in 1776. The town was named for Captain John Haverstraw of the British army and his family after they settled on a farm west of the village. In 1802, the village became part of Rome Township and then Rome School District #5. In 1923, it became part of Rome Annex School District #2 which includes all of present day Sullivan County as well as parts of Orange and Webster counties. On July 1, 1927, West Haverstraw became a hamlet within the new Rome School District #4 which included all but one townships in that district including East Harmony and North Greenbush. On January 15th, 1954, all villages except for West Haverstrawn were merged into Rome School District 4 with its own police department and Fire Department; this action followed an order from Governor Nelson Rockefeller to merge school districts statewide because many rural schools were not meeting state funding demands In 1957–1958 a new high school was built to replace an old building that had been used as a barn by local farmers since before civilization existed thereabouts. This addition increased enrollment by 350 students when it opened in 1958-1959 but soon experienced problems with noise levels due to construction activities nearby and vandalism by students who could not be caught or punished due to lack of resources at that time. A soundproofing project costing $75000 was completed in 1969 which solved most noise issues until 2002 when another construction project caused more explosions that created louder noises than ever before! On September 10th 1961 voters approved subdivision into two portions: “west” (southwest end) consisting mostly of farmland while “north” (northeast end) consisted primarily of housing developments with some commercial buildings located there also although these boundaries have changed over time). With this approval developers began purchasing large tracts adjacent to existing homesites which would become their neighborhoods/cities throughout much of New York State during the 1960s through 1970s boom period following World War II when most people living near cities moved out because commuting costs increased significantly with less need for land closer to work or shopping centers etc.). In 1991 West Haverstraw got its own ZIP code - 11521
