However*,(*see footnote **), some residents began to move away from Wethersfield because they found better opportunities farther east or west in Saratoga County; accordingly*,(*see footnote ***), Wethersfield slowly lost its importance until it completely disappeared during World War II*(**). The town has a population of over 10,000 people today and it is the seat of government for Suffolk County. The town was named after Haverstraw Manor, which was located in what is now East Hampton. Captain West donated many acres of land to the town for its development and it retains much of its historical charm today. The first school in West Haverstraw was built in 1785 and soon there were two schools: one for children from wealthy families and another for those from poor families. By 1824, there were three schools: one for children from rich families, one for those from poor families, and a third school that served as a daycare for mothers who worked outside the home. In 1827, the first post office was established in West Haverstraw and it continued to serve until 1914. In 1831, Captain John West died and his widow Judith took over his business empire which included farming, manufacturing goods such as textiles and shoes, banking (including several failed attempts at starting a bank), shipping services, real estate development (including the founding of what is now East Hampton), ice cream production (the first commercially produced ice cream commercial occurred in 1892),and most importantly her husband's involvement with politics; he represented Wappingers Falls on Long Island during both houses of Congress between 1798-1802 as well as being speaker of the House twice between 1806-1807 before retiring due to ill health. Judith also ran unsuccessfully for election to fill John's congressional seat when it opened up following Congressman James Kieft's death; she lost by only 350 votes out of 3 million cast statewide that year). Captain John West's daughter Abby married Judge Abraham Goldsmith on October 11th,.1796; they had six children including Governor Jonathan Gedney Goldsmith who served briefly under President George Washington during the American Revolution before returning to Massachusetts afterWARS service with Commodore Perry’s forces aboard HMS Beagle In 1924 Captains Rebecca Lord & Augustus Earle Lord founded their family dynasty by marrying Captains Isaac Lord Jr.(4th Baron)of Grays Inn where they resided until their death . Their son Captained Augustus Earle Lord succeeded them however their daughter currently resides at Grays Inn which continues to be run by their descendants
West Haverstraw was founded in 1776 by Captain John Heard and his wife, Deborah. The Heard family ran a farm there until 1825 when they sold it to Colonel George Clinton. The townspeople built the first school in 1827 and the first pastor in 1830. In 1836, West Haverstraw was incorporated as a village. In 1861, it became a town. In 1951, the town merged with neighboring East Haverstraw to form the current city of New York City.
