West Haverstraw is a small, rural town in Rockland County, New York, United States. It is located on the east bank of the Hudson River and lies about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of midtown New York City. The population was 1,167 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now West Haverstraw was Nicholas "Nick" Fenton in 1777. He built a log cabin on land he had purchased from the Lenape people in 1686. The first school in West Haverstraw was built by Nicholas Fenton and his son John Aiken around 1822. In 1827, Captain Isaac Goode erected a gristmill on the east side of Diamond Lake near present day White Plains Road and Putnam Avenue, which became known as Goode's Mill after him. In 1841, Wm Burt opened a blacksmith shop on Main Street in what is now downtown West Haverstraw. In 1853, Alexander Sargent bought a farm north of town from James Cuthbert for $1000 and started to improve it into an estate named Sargent's Farm which eventually became known as West Haverston Manor after him. In 1870–71, Jno Pugh built a sawmill on Roundabout Creek close to where it still stands today; this mill turned out finished lumber for local buildings including churches and schools until prohibition put an end to production in 1933. The Post Office moved from its original location next to the mills to its present-day building at 9 Elmwood Avenue in 1903. On April 15th 1861 when Union soldiers crossed over into Rockland County from Ulster County during the American Civil War under General Ulysses S Grant's orders "to secure all such territories as may hereafter be within our proper jurisdiction", they discovered that most of what are now suburban neighborhoods were already vacated by Yankees because many farmers had left for Yankee territory when war began; some residents reoccupied their homes while others returned home later that year or abandoned the area altogether due to political reasons connected with Reconstruction following slavery’s abolition throughout much of America: see also: African Americans living outside Missouri during Reconstruction era .
