West Haverstraw is a small, one-time town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 5,436 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by colonists from England in 1785 as West Haverstraw on the east side of the Niagara River. When the Erie Canal was built and opened in 1825, much of what is now west of Buffalo became part of western New York. In 1854, after years of debate and discussion among settlers about whether they wanted to stay or move to new towns near Buffalo or take up land east of the river in what is now Elmira, West Haverstraw voted to move to eastern Erie County and remain a village. The name "Haverstraw" originated with John Haverston who settled there in 1785. In 1858, when Niagara Falls were being developed as an amusement park and railway center by developers including George Eastman and Cornelius Vanderbilt III, West Haverstraw voters decided not to annex into the city because they felt that it would be too late for them to have a significant effect on development there. The community continued to exist as a separate hamlet until it merged with other villages within Sullivan County on November 1, 1957 (the merger took place even though no vote had been taken). On May 15th 1954 (the day before full incorporation) WEST HAVERSTRAW VILLAGE INCorporation ACT NOVEMBER 1 1957 was passed by Board OF COMMISSIONERS having 287 votes cast therein—all against annexation into CITY OF BUFFALO

West Haverstraw, located in the town of West Haverstraw on Long Island, was first settled in 1764 by John West and his wife Lydia. The New York State Legislature passed a bill in 1785 making it a part of the newly created County of Nassau. The village developed as a small farming community with two churches and some twenty-five homes. In 1827, the Village of West Haverstraw became part of the newly formed Town of Southampton and then in 1835, became part of the new Town of Haverstraw. In 1872, both Towns were combined to form the new municipality of West Haverstraw. On July 1, 1907, the original Township ceased to exist and its land was merged into the new borough of Hempstead. The population peaked at 2,521 in 1912 but has since declined drastically due to conversions to other religions or flight from violence or economic conditions. As a result, only 240 people remain living within boundaries that once included more than 1,200 residents. Today there are only fifteen homes remaining standing within historical boundaries - four on Main Street and thirteen scattered throughout surrounding countryside including one home on an abandoned military base that is now open for visitors during summertime! Today's economy is based principally on agriculture which continues to be our primary source of income; however we also have some modest manufacturing options available should something sudden arise in our industry (e.g., natural disasters). Additionally we rely heavily upon social services such as education and healthcare which continue to be important elements in our society; however these days they are also expensive affairs with limited funding available outside traditional government channels.
The town of West Haverstraw was first settled in 1714 by Nicholas de Witt and his family. The area that now makes up the town of West Haverstraw was originally part of the towns of Suffern, Niskayuna, and Southold. In 1847, the town of West Haverstraw became a part of the newly formed town of Hempstead.
