This essay helped spur development around Buffalo, New York as well as westward migration within America over the next century. A group of local businessmen donated money towards building a school for children called Green Gables School after creator Daphne du Maurier’s novel series featuring similar characters from Canada to attend public schools there beginning in 1903; however, due to financial difficulties Whitehall High School opened its doors regardless instead with classes starting on September 15th 1909). In 1961-1962 Whitehall merged into East Side High School but still retains many features associated with Green Gables including old Mrs. Lyon’s kitchen where students would eat their morning cereal while playing outside (the door still remains open today). The first settlers of West Haverstraw came from England in 1800. They were farmers and became merchants before moving to what is now East Brunswick, New Jersey in 1814 and then to westchester county, New York in 1815. In 1825 they established a post office at Waverstraw and quickly became one of the most important towns on the west side of Hudson River. In 1835 John Fenton purchased land east of Waverstraw for $10 per acre which he named "Fenton's Ravine". He developed it as a resort community with brick churches, hotels, and other buildings. The townspeople built huge homes here including one that stands to this day called "Fenton's Castle" which was completed in 1840. The popularity of Fenton's Ravine led to businesses opening up all over the town and it soon became known as "the commercial center of westchester county." As industry grew so didresidential development; by 1900 there were more than 100 residences within walking distance of downtown Waverstraw. A few years later another great entrepreneurs like Clarence Dillon started a grocery store on Main Street - it remains one of the most popular stores in town to this day! As people began growing older they needed more space so some developers bought or leased land north of downtown for developing into what is now Niagara Falls Township (population: 8,561). This area would eventually become part of West Haverstraw when Schoharie County was created on January 1, 1922! A major event that took place during these early days was when Buffalo Bill Cody made his annual visit to Waverstraw for three weeks from October 20-241836 while performing his show at Saratoga Springs Race Course! This long lasting impact on the community can be seen today with booths throughout downtown selling Cody memorabilia such as hats and clothing! On July 12th 1889 two trains collided near Fenton's Ravine killing 38 passengers and injuring over 150 others!!! This devastated the small town and left many families struggling financially after losing their jobs due to the accident!! In 1923 local residents formed an organization chartered by Commodore Leslie Joad entitled "The Citizens' Committee To Recover The bodies Of The Two Trains Collided Near Fenton's Ravine" which successfully recovered some human remains from beneath those involved tracks 30 years later!!!!
West Haverstraw was once a thriving center for farming and trade. The area now known as West Haverstraw was first settled by Dutch colonists in the early 1600s.
