Watertown is a town in the U.S. state of New York and the seat of Saratoga County. As of 2010, the population was 19,412. The name Watertown derives from Potowatomie Creek – so named because its course ran through a hollow in the hill near where Fort Wayne now stands – and from nearby Whetstone Swamp which was also known for its high quality white pea flour. The first settler in what is now Watertown was James Stillwell, who arrived there on July 24, 1785, as part of a group led by Captain George Washington during his routing of British forces on the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg. stillwell erected a log cabin at what is now McKean Square and started to trade with local Native Americans based on this location's access to water resources and good soil for farming. In 1814, Jane Addams founded Hull House as anoredocation center for working class women in Chicago. She donated land to be used as an agricultural experiment station in Watertown after her visit there in 1892; it became known as Hull House National Monument in 1937). The town got its name from Potowatomie Creek which flows through it before terminating at Whetstone Swamp - hence "Potowatomie" (Poway means 'water' + "wath' or 'mouth'). Appropriations Act No 601 (March 3, 1865) resolved that all towns within Saratoga County should have their own courts established under Governor Ezra Cornell's supervision; Accordingly, on May 15th 1865, Judge John Hinkle assumed court jurisdiction over all towns within Saratoga County save those specifically mentioned (Watertown & Schenectady). In 1896-97 when ice began to form on Mohawk Lake resulting from intense cold snaps causing severe damage to property along its shoreslines - including extensive flooding across parts of Upstate New York - communities throughout central New York came together to contribute money towards purchasing ice skaters needed to clear roads and highways during winter conditions; this event became known as Ice Day Consequently renamed Watertown Fall Festival every year since then! Watertown is a town in theUpper New York region of New York, United States. The population was 30,759 at the 2010 census. Watertown is located on the east side of Seneca Lake, across from Albany. The name "Watertown" first appeared in 1777 and was derived from an Indian word meaning "place of water". On July 4, 1777, General George Washington met with the Mohawk chiefs at Fort Stanwix to sign the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolutionary War. In 1814, John Bullard built a dam on Seneca Lake near present-day Watertown to generate power for his flour mill; this was one of the earliest projects in Watertown. The town's rich history has been documented by local historians and museums such as Northwestern Memorial Museum and Library and Elmira Historical Society since its incorporation as a village in 1819. A number of significant events have occurred within its boundaries including: 1) The Battle of Saratoga took place here on September 9–10, 1862 between Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate contingents under Robert Ewell; 2) On November 8, 1834, President Andrew Jackson signed into law the Indian Removal Act which led to more than 100% Native American removal from what is now New York state; 3) On December 12th 1861 during America's Civil War (the American Civil War), a large battle took place here between Union forces commanded by Brigadier General Lew Wallace and Confederate troops commanded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest; 4) It was also here that Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous oration "Let Us Not Be Afraid" after meeting with Confederate general James Longstreet at Fort Erie below Buffalo on October 16th 1863; 5) In 1958-1959 two major floods struck Watertown - one which destroyed most buildings along Main Street while another caused extensive damage to stores and homes on Cherry Hill Road. Despite these disasters both times residents managed to rebuild quickly thanks in part to donations from area businesses including Maurer Mattress & Chair Co., Ford Motor Company, Dell Computer etc.; 6) In 1976-1977 three dayslong riots took place throughout upstate New York involving over 200 people following a race riot incidentnear Auburn Hills in Detroit Michigan that year;
Watertown is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 41,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–New York metropolitan area. Watertown has been inhabited by various cultures for thousands of years and was one of the most important towns in New England during its heyday. In 1764, it became the capital of what would become America. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1624 and grew rapidly after Congress created a new state in 1784 to serve as a model forwestern New York. By 1814, Watertown had become an incorporated town with a population of 100,000 people. After George Washington's death in 1800, his widow ordered all government papers to be destroyed and no copies made public so that her husband could be buried with dignity at Mount Vernon within only two years of his death. The stream which flowed through Watertown into Lake Ontario was renamed Washington Boulevard in her honor. Watertown experienced rapid growth following World War II due to its proximity to military bases and manufacturing plants throughout central New York State; this growth slowed beginning in the late 1960s as mills closed down and jobs moved away from Watertown into other areas of the Finger Lakes region
