It is the county seat of Westchester County and the second-largest city in westchester County after Purchase. Watertown was founded in 1777 by General Philip Schuyler as an agricultural village on the north bank of the Hudson River. In 1824, it became a city under one mayor and five wards with a population of 64,721. By 1930, Watertown had become one of the most industrialized cities in New York State with heavy manufacturing and trade sectors including automobiles, rubber products, textiles and plastics. The area around what is now Watertown was first settled by Native Americans about 12 miles (19 km) south of present day Albany on high ground that commands a view of both rivers. In 1777, General Philip Schuyler led an army against Indian forces commanded by Chief Putnam near modern-day Waterloo Road and Upper Saratoga Creek junction during the American Revolutionary War. The Village of Saratoga was erected to commemorate this event on November 7th, 1777 by Colonel George Washington as part of his military campaign to expand English settlements beyond their traditional boundaries eastward along Lake Ontario into upstate New York beyond Niagara Falls. Watertown is a town in New York County, New York, United States. The population was 11,763 at the 2010 census. Watertown has been inhabited by the Mohawk people since at least 1614 and by the Seneca nation since 1714. The Dutch founded the town in 1673 as a trading post on the lower Susquehanna River. In 1764, during the French and Indian War, it became part of Cumberland County. It was renamed Watertown after Connecticut's capital Hartford in 1765. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Watertown was built by Puritans from Connecticut in 1674 as a trading post on the lower Susquehanna River opposite where modern-day West Point is located. In 1764, during the French and Indian War, it became part of Cumberland County and was named for Colonel John Montgomery (1634-1711), an English military officer who fought with George Washington at Valley Forge. Colonel Montgomery had come to North America aboard his ship "New Amsterdam" following his victory over General James Wolfe at Quebec City Bridge on July 14, 1759. He surveyed most of present-day Watertown while he was here and picked out this site for its economy based on annual flooding of the Susquehanna River which would provide ample water power for mills built along its banks. Mills were developed throughout much of eastern Pennsylvania until 1857 when Congress passed an act prohibiting river navigation without a license from state governments; this law led to rapid development of towns downstream along rivers such as Erie and Pennsylvania's Allegheny Mountains where licensing requirements no longer mattered so mills could be built close to water supplies rather than far away from them. In 1810–1811 Captain Isaac Brock landed two vessels loaden with goods from Britain off what is now Upper Saratoga Lake within present day Watertown limits; these were among many early American visits to that region which led then-Governor Tryon to name what are today downtown streets after him including Brock Street (now State Street) and Tryon Alley (now Elmira Avenue). In 1812 Fort Stanwix was destroyed by British forces during Queen Anne's War but Brock never lost faith that western Canada could be discovered through exploration so he again set out in search of new land beyond Albany Harbor; he arrived back at Woodstock Landing near modern day Albany on September 12th after four months journey nonstop via lakes Ontario and Erie - one return trip takingfour days round trip! He described his journey in a letter to Governor Tryon: "I have continued my route through Western Canada all this way without being once laid down or I should have had occasion [to stop] But it has been very tedious going so fast." After reaching Fort Stanwix again only 10 miles distant he proceeded upriver about 20 miles more before returning home via Buffalo Creek before disembarking at Woodstock Landing just outside present day Watertown limits late on September 12th.- thus completing one third leg of his grand tour! This event also made Brock famous throughout North America as captaincy hereditary among certain Scottish immigrants who settled along east coast US frontier.- boundary changes subsequent to war cause future expansion westward into current day Wyoming & Montana hands
