Watertown, New York is a small town in upstate New York located on the Mohawk River. The population was 14,528 at the 2010 census and it is the seat of Schuyler County. Watertown's history dates back to 1795 when it became a part of Albany, New York. In 1824, Watertown became the capital of Canandaigua County and in 1829, it became a part of Niagara Falls Territory. The first post office was established in Watertown on October 5, 1827. The town was named for Loyalist General John Newton watertown (1755-1836), who had fought against British forces during the American Revolution and later served as an United States Senator from New York. In 1830, Buffalo Creek was diverted into Canandaigua Creek through what is now North Main Street in order to improve navigation on the river. This also created new land for development and made possible Grass Valley School District #1's acquisition of what is today South Main Street from Ulster Township in 1912-13. In 1838, when Kanandaigua County was divided into two parts by Connecticut Governor Edward Everett Gerry as part of his creation of Dutchess County,[1] Watertown came within Albany City Limits but with no vote given since there were only 7 residents living in Albany City Limits at that time[2]. On January 1st, 1840,[3] Albany City Limits were detached from Watertown becoming its own incorporated village with a population of 10 residents[4]. On February 15th[5], 1840,[6], Schenectady Canal Company laid down their tracks through much of present day Watertown along presented by George Washington Carver which would eventually lead to Auburn University being founded just south east within what is today Schenectady Township (population 8700). On July 1st 1860,[7][8] under an act approved by Congress called "An Act To establish a Post Office atWaterford on the Mohawk River",[9][10][11] former Ulysses S Grant became Postmaster General and set about opening mail routes between Buffalo and Syracuse using horses then steamboats.[12][13][14] With this service began what has been called "the most extensive postal system ever constructed"[15], allowing farmers to sell goods directly to consumers without having to go through larger towns or villages such as Norwich or Utica where prices were often inflated by merchants who controlled access to markets.[16],[17] By 1870s approximately one million packages per year were handled via water transportation alone with only six miles remaining between Buffalo NY and Troy NY; henceforth known as Mail Route 6! In 1907 after years of petitioning by community leaders including Drs Samuel Morse & Alfred Vail [18],[19], US Postal Service Commissioner Arthur Carter ordered that all rural mail be delivered directly to homes rather than going through larger communities where rates could be higher due to exclusive control by commercial interests over delivery corridors; this began known as "The Great White Way" program which ended with USPS monopoly over rural mail delivery services following other mergers throughout 1970s culminating in 1996 when America Online Incorporated purchased USPS mainline operations across country[20]. As online shopping mushroomed around world beginning early 2000s many people found themselves sending large quantities emails/phone calls/text messages etc., outside their home countries - effectively turning their physical residences into virtual offices!
