Watertown is a small town in the Mohawk Valley of New York State. It is located in the towns of Schenectady, Albany and Deerfield, and the villages of Watertown Heights and North Greenbush. The population was 26,855 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Watertown was Nicholas Putnam Jr., who arrived in 1673. He named his new settlement after himself, Nicholas Putnamstown (now part of Schenectady). In 1785, Watertown became a separate township from Albany. In 1827, whenNY became a state under the new United States Constitution, it included all of what are now Tioga County and parts of Schoharie County. The eastern border of NY state then included most of present-day Waterloo County as well as much of Tioga and Saratoga Counties north to Goshen Lake. When NY statehood was granted to Massachusetts on November 3, 1846 by President James Kahl (a Republican), all this remained within NY until that state's application for admission to the Union be filed with US District Court on March 9, 1850 – three days before NY's official entry into the Union on April 1st! The western boundary line between NY and Massachusetts had been changing rapidly since 1800 due to population growth along river valleys west of Buffalo Bill’s Indian Reserve; when New England gained admitted status as a full country under the Nationality Act (U.S.) July 14th 1861 it lost its western boundary which went from Canada to Mexico through Central America until finally being reinstated eastward about 1870 when USGS map revisions put Niagara River just east-of-US Border at modern day Ithaca! This rapid change left many areas including portions around Erie Canal towpaths variously claimed by both states until final disposition by US Supreme Court following case known as United States v New York (1879) – ending any possibility that Niagara River could become an illegally acquired Canadian border land!
Watertown is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in New York State. The two small villages of North Watertown and South Watertown are located within its boundaries. Watertown was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1614 as a trading post on the southern border of present-day Oneida County. On February 13, 1797, it became part of Albany under the terms of the Treaty of Paris after France and her colonies ceded all their lands east of Lake Ontario to Great Britain as part of the Quebec Convention. In 1800, Albany and surrounding towns were merged into one city named Albany (now Times Union) with Watertown as its capital. In 1814, when Albany was renamed for George Washington following his victory over British forces at Saratoga Springs, Watertown followed suit and also changed its name to honor Washington. After his death in 1801, Congress granted exclusive rights to fur traders to settle in what became known as "New Amsterdam", including both Watertown and Northwater Township; this land lay between present-day West Side Highway (I-787) and Waterloo Road (NYS Route 9). The area now south of I-787 was included in Watertown on November 3rd, 1686 when English settlers arrived from Ipswichshire via an extended family migration westward across Long Island Sound that year according to local history book "The History Of Oneida County." That same day Holy Cross Parish established separate worship services for Roman Catholics and Protestants at what is now First Baptist Church building on Second Street just north of current Main Street where today's Nassau Avenue splits off from Main Street just past First BaptistChurch property line westward before reaching George Washington Boulevard which divides downtown watertown into two unequal halves or wards - one Catholic while other Protestant - until reestablishmentof Holy Cross Parish on October 7th 1795 at corner of Nassau Avenue/George Washington Boulevard/Nassau Streets On November 3rd 1686 English Settlers arrive from Ipswichshire via extended family migration westward across Long Island Sound that year according to local history book"The History Of Oneida County".
