The current water purification plant was constructed in 1952 by Seagrams Corporation following recommendations from scientists at UPMC School of Medicine who were testing new ways to clean up drinking supplies caused by nuclear radiation exposure. The original design called for two 6-liter steel drums filled with thousands of gallons (200 thousand litres) of contaminated river water that would be forced through a series of screens before release into local riverside waterways near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; this project eventually failed because Ofir Beigel, an engineer at Seagrams Corporation, discovered high levels of radioactive materials inside the drums which he believed would cause cancer if ingested by humans or animals! Despite this setback, Beigel's work paved the way for later large-scale deployments such as those found at our present day Watertown Filtering Plant!

It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-New Rochelle, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Watertown was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1624 and became a hamlet in 1797. The territory now comprising Watertown was acquired by the United States in 1812 as part of Albany County. In 1814, when Albany County was divided between New York and Vermont, Watertown became part of the newly created Niagara County. On July 14, 1846, water commissioners from seven towns along the Mohawk River agreed to form an irrigation district with a capital of $10 million to be named after George Washington andosponsored by Senator John Cavanaugh of Massachusetts as an act to promote development along the river system. The name "Washington Irrigation District" was first used for that purpose on October 1, 1847. By 1850, however, only two out of thirteen towns were still within the district; Niagara Falls had been acquired adjacent to Ontario County and Buffalo had been annexed into Erie County. In 1861 WashingtonIrrigationDistrict merged with Westchester County under Secretary of War Edwin Mudge for economic reasons; it ceased operations effective December 15th that year due to budget cuts caused by increasing agricultural prices across all participating jurisdictions followingincoln's Emancipation Proclamation
