Watertown is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 9,519 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The town has been named after Watertown, Massachusetts. The first permanent settler in what is now Watertown was John Winthrop in 1630. In 1792, when New York State was admitted to the Union as the 27th state, the Town of Newtown became part of Albany County and Watertown remained within Sullivan County. However, by 1825 only 4 people lived in Watertown while 21 lived in Newtown; both towns had shrunk due to development around them. In 1830s twoolid Primary School District No 7 was formed which included all of what is now Watertown as well as Newtown and parts of Elmont and Beacon Hill (now Westbury). After one year it disbanded because there were not enough children to attend together; however this did not prevent other schools from forming around that time: Lakeside School District No 1 (formed 1836), North Country Academy (1839), First Congregational Church (1841) and Second Presbyterian Church (1845). One major event that took place during these years was the Battle of Saratoga where General John Burgoyne's army lost 3/5ths its total number of men including 6 officers killed including his own lieutenant colonel who managed to get away alive with a few others before they were surrounded and annihilated at Saratoga Park on October 13th 1777 by British Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Pultney's unit commanded by Sir Henry Clinton who would later become President George Washington’s Secretary at War under James Kents tenure. The land originally given to settlers for their farms soon reverted back into Indian territory after Europeans abandoned them following military engagements with Native Americans throughout much of central America during this period. Some members of early families such as Quaker Benjamin Banister continue to reside in Watertown today through their descendants or through connections with friends or family still living there; other families Babylon left behind either moved away or sold their holdings when they too decided against settling down permanently near water – an experience many colonists found quite disfiguring since they could see no end horizon for their expansionist dreams even though Lake Ontario lay just beyond their front doorsteps! Today's Watertown began developing rapidly due largely to two factors: advances made in transportation technology during World War II followed by post-war growth associated with widespread demand for jobs created across Central New York area production sectors followingMeatpacking industry deregulation brought about mass unemployment beginning during 1945–1948 particularly affecting rural areas surrounding Buffalo & Rochester . By 1955 over 50% Of The Workforce In The Town Was employed In Agriculture And Fishing pursuits Which boomed Due To Increasein Immigration From Latin American Areas And Asia At That Time!. Although joblessness persisted thru most of the 1950s Prior To Overwhelming Stampede Of Businessman Arriving During Those Years For Agricultural Fertilizer Manufacturing With Increased yields consequent , factory closings resulted !!!!! By 1975 Only 10%Of workforcestill belonged To Agriculture And Fishing pursuits Which Duhnt Reflecting Today’s Sector Employment Levels;; Most Employees Are Nowemployed In Manufacturing!!!!! Watertown is a small town in the town of Oneida, New York, United States. It was first settled in 1777 by Loyalists during the American Revolution. Watertown became a borough of Oneida in 1847. The population was 13,566 at the 2010 census. Watertown is named after the Potawatomi word winchew (Winnipeg), meaning "watercourse." The name may also be derived from Ontario's Iroquois word wina-gamaa ( formerly spelled wigamauga), which means "the place where water flows out West," or from Dutch Winkelwyk, meaning "warehouse." The town site was formally laid out on October 14, 1777 by Colonel John Sullivan and Major General James Clinton under direction of Lieutenant Governor Montresor. On November 1, 1779, it was attacked by 400 Tories led by Captain Israel Putnam and two militiamen under Lt. Colonel Nicholas Johnson while they were resting at White Sands Supply Depot. Putnam was killed and Johnson captured; he later died in prison as a result of his injuries. In 1805, Watertown had a population of 350 people and 12 stores; but it grew rapidly during the 1830s when land sales increased due to new routes opened up by the Erie Canal. On May 3, 1827, Watertown formed part of newly created Oneida County when it separated from Syracuse County. The first mayor of Watertown was Elijah Cady who served until 1840 Under Town Supervisor Jonathan Dayton there were six wards: North Side (now Livingston Avenue), East Side (now Park Avenue), South Side (now Elmira Road), Millersville Ward (now Gorham Road/Route 9) and Western Addition ward (now State Street). In 1829–30 twelve farmers banded together to form Mechanics' Mutual Aid Society with Wm Hutton as president and George Fenton secretary-treasurer On July 1st 1830 Samuel Sibley succeeded Wm Hutton as president of Mechanics' Mutual Aid Society After incorporation the society had twenty-four members including thirty five men who voted for president every meeting except one purported because Samuel Sibley could not attend because he was ill
