Watertown, New York is well known for its gun mags history. The first gun mag in the town was founded in 1835 by a group of men led by Captain John Paulding. The first issue of the Watertown Gazette featured an advertisement for a gun club to be formed at the local schoolhouse. This club met monthly and used the library as their meeting place. In 1840, Captain Paulding donated land to the town for a public park and this park became home to both the Watertown Museum and Fire Hall. In 1865, Mayor George Fenton negotiated an agreement with King & Wishart Magazines (now Wernher von Braun Associates) which allowed them to open a store in downtown Watertown. This store continued selling magazines until 1971 when it was closed due to fire damage. Today, there are several museums in Watertown focused on different aspects of gun culture including rifles and shotguns, handguns, ammunition, and firearms restoration/repair. Additionally, there areseveral shooting ranges located throughout town that offer instruction on all types of firearms including airguns, pistols, shotguns, rifles etc.
