Watertown, New York is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. Watertown was founded by Increase Mather in 1797 and became a village in 1825. The town became an incorporated village in 1857 and finally a town on April 14, 1867. The name of the original settlement may have been based on the Saugeen River which extended into what is now Watertown from beyond the then hunting ground of modern day Northold Manor. Alternatively, it may be derived from Waerhtouna (Waerhtouna), meaning "water-worn place." In either case, the naming of the settlement could reflect its location at or near water supplies both natural and human-made. Watertown first attracted settlers because of its strategic location as one of three crossings on Canandaigua Lake across from Syracuse; this made it convenient for goods to be transported between Syracuse and Albany through Canandaigua Creek. The Town's first courthouse was built in 1800 by Colonel Nathaniel Greene with funds contributed by General John Burgoyne. During George Washington's presidency (1789-97) Watertown served as his presidential headquarters during some important meetings including those with Great Britain at Valley Forge and France at Ticonderoga Heights. It also serves as an annual site for maple syrup production ceremonies organized by local farmers' organizations such as the National Maple Syrup Association whose members grow sugar beet crops near where Washington once resided. In later years there were many settlements established around Watertown however only two – Northold Manor and West Seneca – remain today as villages within Saratoga County while still retaining their own municipal governments separate from that of Watertown proper although they are regarded informally among residents as part of "the town". Northold Manor is located north east of downtown while West Seneca is located west northwest of downtown just off State Route 9A about midway between Watertown center and Cartersville; these villages together make up what is now known as "Northold Township" while "West Seneca Township" still includes parts of present day Wallingford within its borders southeast of downtown - all hamlets still considered part of "Watertown". During World War II much activity took place in nearby Scranton over fears that Japan might attack America mainland via Pearl Harbor but little happened to inhabit or exploit what lay south side Of Interstate 95 immediately adjacent to Scranton - Scranton never had any significant military significance other than being home to most notably US Steel until it closed operations there following World War II when foreign investment dried up leaving no jobs available here competing with plants abroad even though steel manufacturing did play an important role early in American history Prior to 1945 much manufacturing here centered around Textiles & Clothing stores like Sears Roebuck & Co which produced Singer Sewing machines until that company went bankrupt due to pressure from unions after WWI . Today much smaller businesses continue production here such as Apparel store Macy's who operates outta Building #1 since 1957

It grew quickly as a commercial and military center during the Revolution and after the war, becoming a key junction of the Erie Canal and Mohawk River systems. In 1815, it was renamed Washington County after President James K. Polk. The town's population reached 10,000 by 1830, but declined following industrialization and development elsewhere in the county. Watertown regained some growth during World War II as an important munitions manufacturing center before declining again in the postwar period. Since 2000, it has been considered part of the larger Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area.
