By 1840 much of downtown had been destroyed by burning settlements caused by shoddy construction techniques used at the time when towns were founded as villages (as opposed to being planned with layout based on natural resources). After years of effort by many people including Mayor James Van Buren and Congressman Augustus Kelley (who unsuccessfully challenged Jackson), Watertown's reconstruction began under Governor John Stevens in 1845-46 following a report prepared by his predecessor George Clinton which recommended demolishing all but one block of downtown due to lack of future development potential outside of shopping streets surrounding it . Watertown experienced modest growth until World War II when it became a major manufacturing center with huge production facilities for munitions and shipbuilding. Afterward growth slowed as jobs moved offshore or away from coastal states such as New York City or Philadelphia because cheaper labor could be found elsewhere during those times of economic recession . However over recent years newer businesses have begun to fill some empty storefronts vacated by long gone businesses as well as new residential development bringing more people into town which has helped spur growth once again .

Watertown is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 33,521 at the 2010 census. Watertown is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. It is one of three towns that make up the town of Rome on the Hudson River between Manhattan and Yonkers. The first settlers in what would become Watertown were Dutchmen who arrived in 1624 from Amsterdam. They named their settlement "Watervliet", after the river they founded, but it was abandoned by them in 1627 because of Spanish interference with their trade on the river. A group of English Protestants settled here in 1638 and called themselves "Thetfordians". In 1764, General George Washington's army burned down Thetfordianowne to prevent its inhabitants from fleeing to Canada during the American Revolution. In 1814, while still part of Thetfordshire, Watertown became a separate municipality under federal jurisdiction as part of Albany County. When Albany County was merged into Westchester County in 1898, Watertown remained an independent municipality until consolidation under New York State government occurred in 1959. The first store on Main Street opened in 1865 when Amos Prentice built his store there from parts of his farm which he had purchased just east of downtown Watertown from Nicholas Hardenbeck Jr.. By 1872, other stores had followed and by 1886 there were 10 businesses operating within what is now downtown watertown with over 100 employees! In 1902 Union Carbide Corporation established a large plant there for producing kerosene for lighting purposes; it would remain an important part of the community through numerous expansions and closures throughout its history including several massive layoffs during World War II due to shortages caused by Germany’s production restrictions embargoed by America . The mill closed its doors permanently on July 15th 1946 following years plagued with automation being introduced without any corresponding increases or jobs available outside those doing manual labor only!
