Watertown was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1624 and became an important fur-trading center during the eighteenth century. The town was reorganized as a village in 1825 and became a city in 1908. In 1923, Watertown merged with nearby Schenectady to form one municipality known as Schenectady/Watertown. The history of Watertown begins with its original settlement by Dutch colonists on Long Island Sound in 1624. The residents were used to fishing from their boats on Long Island's many islands including Castleton Island (now part of Albany), which they named "Watervliet". One day early traders discovered land on what would become Watertown on October 17th of that year by sightseeing from their ship "Nieuwkomer", when it stopped off at Castleton for supplies bound for Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan's north shore. A group of ten men set out from Staten Island under Nieuwkomer's guidance and arrived at present-day downtown Watertown on November 2nd of that year with goods they had bought from Indians along the way. That same day, they erected a small cabin near where the current courthouse stands today while they awaited instructions from Governor John Winthrop to move inland or abandon their enterprise due to hostile natives occupying present-day New Netherland Colony across Kingston Bayou (present-day Albany). On December 1st of that year, another group led by Hendrick Vrooman reached northeastern tip of Long Island opposite what is now Watertown arriving there just after nightfall after walking all night over snow covered hills towardscodfish ponds near modern day Kingston Landing Point - site where Hudson's Bay Company trading post once stood - having abandoned their earlier plans to establish themselves permanently inland because of Indian hostility towards white settlers living among them. In 1686, followingillacited English settlements around present day Hartford and Derby Connecticut; large numbersIrish Presbyterians immigrated here under pressure from religious leaders back home who saw this as an opportunity to escape Catholic persecution there so these newcomers founded two churches – First Baptist Meetinghouse (later renamed Our Lady’s Chapel) & Second Presbyterian Church – both located downtownwaterfront Building between Court Street & North avenue todayknown as Reformed Episcopal Cathedral before being destroyed by fire in 1830 while housed inside new government buildings south side Court street next door which still stands today althougthout any services offered today outside heated weather conditions! As early as 1689 gold had been found west of Mohawk River but no significant development ensued until late 18th century when several entrepreneurs decided to exploit this new discovery and later sell rights for prospecting trips through watery areas bordering Canada into marketable quantities near modern day Saratoga Springs NY; major player being Nicholas Ulster who started calling himself Nicholas de Zeeuwenhof also known alias Nickname Of Saratoga springs although his real name was Cornelius Vanderbilt! Eventually most everyone involved got rich smuggling natural gas and other minerals overland through narrow parts of Canada including upper Great Lakes region becoming known as “The Erie Canal Gang”! All these activities attracted attention not onlyfrom British authorities but also American officials who began conducting investigations culminatingin arrivalof US Marines onto Canadian soil during War Of 1812 resultingin capture & execution OF leader OF “Erie Canal Gang”!! During 1800s more people moved into what is now Watertown including some Germans immigrants coming via Hamburg Germany Rail Road company train & boatloads arriving here variously called Wetzlarstadt German Settlement before finally settling permanently c1795; main commercial activity being raising chickens for local farmers! During Panic Of 1837 some 300+ citizens left town3rd largest exodus ever experienced upstate NY!!! Most went eastward joining emerging United Empire Loyalists behind American lines!! Many prominent citizens join military during Revolution leading up To Battle At Saratoga
Watertown is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–AVERY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Watertown were three brothers, Job and David Smith, who arrived on horseback from Connecticut in 1784. They founded the town on the east side of Mohawk River near present-day Union Station. David Smith's grandson, Benjamin Banneker, donated land to the town for a courthouse and school. The village of Watertown was established about 1812 by members of the First Congregational Church as a post office and cultural center for surrounding farmers and other rural residents. In 1831, Watertown became an incorporated village with a mayor and five trustees; it had a total population of 1,500. In 1842 it became an incorporated city with Mayor John Hynes as its first mayor and 15 trustees; its population reached 4,000. In 1907 it merged with Syracuse to form the Syracuse–AVERY metropolitan statistical area
