Valley Stream is a town in the Hudson Valley of New York, United States. The population was 9,644 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream is part of the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Valley Stream were the Lenape who called it "Nisqueton". In 1614, settlers from England founded Middleburg Manor on land that today forms the eastern border of Valley Stream. They named their settlement after a valley in Scotland where they had been born. The English explorer and cartographer John Smith passed through this area on his way to Manhattan in 1624 and found many valleys with similar names but no such valley near by known as ValleyStream. He suggested that this be renamed for him because he thought it might be more likely that someone would find it eventually than something like Middleburg Manor or Newburgh Manor which he had explored earlier. In 1795, Peter Minuit bought 6 million acres (22 km²) of forested hills between present-day Poughkeepsie and Albany from the Dutch East India Company for $25 per acre ($2 million at current prices). This included much of what is now Valley Streams townships and villages including North Greenbush, South Greenbush, Haverstraw, Perinton, Woodbridge and Beverley Hills. In 1807–8 James Kapp purchased another 1 million acres (4 km²), most notably including present-day Watkins Glen within its boundaries; Kapp's Purchase remained unsold until 1813 when his son George acquired it from Alexander Hamilton for $3 million (now worth over $100 million). The first stores opened in Valley Stream were apothecaries located on Main Street near the junction of Present-Day Courtlandt Avenue and Merrick Road between 1820 and 1830. These stores were followed by grocery stores opening later in the century along Courtlandt Avenue between Merrick Road and Church Street; these stores are still open today as Wellesley Grocery Store & Deli Inc., which since 2002 has also been operated as a convenience store/bakery chain with over 200 locations across New York State

Originally designed as a less-lethal weapon to subdue and control animals, tasers have since been used in human communities to incapacitate assailants. Today, Taser International manufactures and markets the most popular type of taser, the Takata ionizing device (TID). The TID is a non-lethal electric shockdevice that is inserted into the body through an application site on the chest or back. After being shocked, the victim feels a brief electrical current that can incapacitate them for up to five minutes. Tasersfirst became available in 1991 when they were developed by San Diego Police Department (SDPD) officers Brian Dolan and Jason Haglund. The two officers were trying to subdue an assailant who had stabbed one of their colleagues during an street fight. They found that using pepper spray was not effective enough and decided to try using a taser instead. Initially, there was some skepticism about whether or not tasers could be effective when used offensively against humans. However, after seeing how successful they were in controlling animals, police departments started manufacturing them widely across North America. In 2002, Taser International developed the first commercially available air-dischargeable electric stun gun which became known as the Matrix II flashbang grenade launcher/taser system[1]. The Matrix II system allows law enforcement agencies to deploy more powerful devices with shorter ranges than traditional firearms such as handguns while still being able to inflict serious harm with just one shot[2]. Since its introduction into service in 2002, the Matrix II has become one of the most commonly used self-defense devices in society[3]. Valley Stream was a small, rural village in upstate New York that became a major center of industry and trade during the mid-19th century. Valley Stream was founded by brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Stockhausen in 1814 as a trading post on the west side of Lake Ontario. The original stockade consisted of a palisade fence and watchtower. By 1830, the villagers had built a more substantial fortification, which they named Fort Niagara after the then British North American Territory stretching from Nova Scotia to southern Quebec. In 1846, the United States acquired part of Canada through the Mexican-American War and renamed it California; Valley Stream remained an unincorporated community within New York State until its dissolution in 1924. Valley Stream is now located within Whitesboro Township, Onondaga County, New York. The valley has been known for its natural resources such as coal, iron ore, limestone and lumber since before recorded history. In 1792, George Washington visited Valley Stream while on his way to Kingston upon Hull in British America and noted its beauty for himself. He also noted that it would be convenient to move goods between Great Britain and America if he were ever attacked by French forces ashore on Long Island Sound. The first commercial establishment at Valley Stream was founded by John Batchelor in 1793 as one of several trading posts along what is now Interstate 95 east of Buffalo NY
