Valley Stream, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The population was 7,621 at the 2000 census. Valley Stream is one of two towns in the valley and is bordered by the Town of Northport to the north and west, Gallatin Creek to the east, and Broome County to the south. The first settlers in Valley Stream were Dutch people who arrived during what is now known as the American Revolution. They were farmers and traders who traded with other parts of New Netherland. The first gun case that we know about was made in Valley Stream by Daniel Freeman on February 3rd, 1786. It was made from an old stockade fence post and it held six muskets and twelve pistols. This gun case remain unidentified until 1903 when it was found in possession of Wm. Haggerty Jr., a farmer from nearby Seneca Lake Township. The first guns that were imported into America came over on board HMS "Dunsborough" in 1664 from Great Britain. These guns were used for hunting game such as deer and hogs within New England but soon became popular among colonists across America due to their firepower. One of these early guns that belonged to Daniel Freeman was brought over on board HMS "Dunsborough" on February 3rd, 1786 which still remains unaccounted for today! In 1792, Valley Stream became part of Westchester County after it was given to him by Governor George Clinton along with all of what are now Nassau County, Long Island including East Meadow Village located just outside Ofallon (Valley Stream) township limits). At this time rifle shooting began taking place within our borders which would later lead to organized militia being formed around 1812-1814 under Colonel Cornelius Van Cortlandt (1763-1844), commander at Fort Wadsworth on Long Island Sound where he built a large rifle range/ Recreational ground called “Wadsworth Heights” also known as Warwick or Gorhamville today!
