Valley Stream is a town in New York State, United States. It is west of the city of New York City on the Hudson River. The population was 11,354 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream's economy is based primarily on agriculture and manufacturing. The town was named for valley streams that crossed the area. The first settlers in Valley Stream were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1624 and founded a small settlement north of what is now Valley Stream. In 1795, the Connecticut General Assembly granted land to John Jacob Astor for his development of Long Island Sound as one of his three New York Territory properties. In 1809, Astor sold all his holdings in Long Island Sound to Nicholas de Montresor for $1 million cash. This made Valley Stream one of the most successful communities in upstate New York during its early days. In 1827, James Purdy bought some rights to what are now North Main Street and Westchester Avenue from Nicholas de Montresor for $10,000 cash. This gave Purdy control over much of what is now Valleystream Village north of South Main Street. Development began around this time with construction of homes and businesses along North Main Street and Westchester Avenue between 1827 and 1840s by Purdy himself as well as others involved with his business ventures such as Isaac Watts & Son waterworks Company (1840-1950), Josiah Morse Paper Manufacturing Company (1850-1925), Father Divine Convent School (1860-1915) – among many others .
