Valley Stream is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 8,859 at the 2010 census. The town is located partially in the Town of Westmoreland and partly in the Town of East Aurora. The early settlers to Valley Stream were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. They were followed by English colonists in 1664 and then by Germans in 1681. In 1738, the first settler, Daniel Smeaton, died on his homestead. A few years later, Abraham Cope settled here also and started a tannery. In 1802, William Bishop purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land along the Mohawk River from Sir John Johnson for $1,500 (). Bishop used it as a grazing ground for his cows and horses and as an agricultural center for growing corn, beans and other crops. He also built a mill which became known as "Bishop's Mill". In 1809-10 Reverend George Parker built a log chapel near present-day Lake Ontario Street to serve as a community center for Valley Stream residents. It was destroyed in 1814 when fire burned through most of town. In 1815-16 Samuel Morse constructed two telegraph lines from Schenectady to Albany with relay stations at Kingston (now Rockland), Canandaigua (now Syracuse) and Utica (now Thornburgh). Valley Stream had become one of America's first Wire Towns because wire transmission required high voltages (>30 kV). From this point forward until about 1870 when he sold all his holdings to Jonathan Noyes (a representative from Buffalo), Valley Stream's most prolific developer and land owner; Noyes also helped lay out modern streets and highways within the town center while continuing to own much of what later became Vallestream Commons developmentally throughout its history even though he never lived there himself.
