The first Europeans to arrive in this area were Dutch settlers who traveled downriver from Albany in 1624. They name one of their towns after Colonel John Glenville (1560–1625), an Englishman who had landed at Fort Orange on Long Island in 1596 and explored much of present-day New York City. In 1774, when Valley Stream became part of Glens Falls Township, its residents voted to incorporate as a village, which they did on April 7, 1775. The industrial revolution began to take hold in Valley stream during the 19th century; industry included tanning, cheese making, papermaking and brewing. By 1900 about 60% of Valley stream's employed residents were farmers or related directly to agriculture; today less than 10% do so. A few remained engaged in manufacturing until recently but it has all but disappeared since automation began taking over many jobs throughout the economy during the past two decades; today only a few small businesses still produce items typically found inside homes such as kitchen gadgets or appliances.
