Valley Stream means "valley of the stream" in English and "Canalside" in French. The valley was first populated by the Seneca people and later by Dutch settlers who named it after a small stream they had discovered near their farmstead on January 24th, 1625. On November 10th of that year, Governor Dongan issued a proclamation setting forth the boundaries of New York state and granting land to those who would settle within them including land around what is now Valley Stream. The first permanent settler in what is now Valley Stream was Nicholas Janssen who arrived on February 12th, 1627 with his family from Rotterdam along with about 50 others from Holland's Utrecht colony under Captain Hendrick Van Swaart. Janssen founded what is now First Congregational Church in 1786 which remains one of the town's oldest buildings to this day. Valley Stream became part of Erie County on May 1st 1837 when that county was created from parts of Ontario and Niagara counties. The population increased rapidly during the post-Civil War years as local businesses were established to support soldiers moving back into former Union territory following the end of hostilities. In 1919 Main Street between Canalside Avenue and Newtown Road was renamed Technology Parkway in honour of pioneering computer scientist George Orwell who had moved to Buffalo two years earlier while still at college at Fordham University where he had been studying law under President James Kefauver (1867-1947). The name valley stream comes from a watercourse that flows through the town and forms part of the border between Kings County on the east and Orange County on the west. Valley Stream first appeared on maps in 1785 when Colonel George Clinton mapped out what is now Valley Stream–Kingstown Road. A post office called Valley Stream was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1813-14, surveyors discovered coal seams near present-day Valley Stream–Kingstown Road. Coalmining began around this time, and production increased as more mines were opened along Kingstown Road. By 1870, there were ten mines operating in Valley Stream–Kingstown Road alone; however, by 1910 only three remained open.[2] The decline of coal mining led to an increase in manufacturing during the late 19th century; however, this growth also came with some environmental drawbacks including air pollution from industry and flooding due to heavy rains which damaged infrastructure.[3] The early 20th century saw a shift towards agriculture as more people migrated to new settlements throughout Westchester County; though farming did not become common until after World War II,[4] valley stream became known for its produce such as apples and tomatoes. Manufacturing declined again during the 1960s but has since reemerged as a majorstay of Valleys Brook Township economy[5]. This rebirth has been helped by advances in technology which have made valley stream one of New York's most popular tourist destinations for relaxation and escape from city life.
