Valley Stream is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 7,865 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream is bordered by Hempstead to the east and west, Rockville Centre to the north, Farmingdale to the south-southwest and Oyster Bay to the southeast. The town of Valley Stream was founded in 1788 by Major John Sargent and Colonel George Wright as an outpost on Long Island Sound. It became a township in 1825. The town's first courthouse was built in 1832 on Main Street near what is now Canal Avenue. In 1885 it became a city and had its own mayor and council until 1971 when it merged with Hempstead Township. In 1895 John Daugherty opened one of America's first gun shops in Valley Stream, which functioned as a business until 1938 when he closed it due to prohibitionism. In 1919 he reopened it as Daugherty's Gun Store which continued until his death in 1951; at that time it was still the largest gun store east of Newark, NJ. After Daugherty's death his son Edward Daugherty took over operations from 1951-1983 under the name "Eddie." From 1983-1991 Eddie Daugherty Jr., operated the store as an online retailer under his father's legacy while also owning numerous businesses within Nassau County including construction services, real estate development and agriculture interests.
