Valley Stream, New York is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY-NJ-CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. Valley Stream is an agricultural community and has been since 1792 what is now Chemung County. The first gun in Valley Stream was made by Nicholas Flushing in 1792. There are numerous patents for pistols and rifles from this time period including one by George Washington that mentions "a small piece of brass or iron to be inserted into the barrel of a rifle to keep it steady." The first shotgun in Valley Stream was made by John Fenton in 1815. A few years later there were also handguns and rifles manufactured here including two guns that were built for General George Washington himself which are now on display at the Valleybrook Museum in Utica, New York.

Settlement continued until 1814 when the Erie Canal was completed and made Valley Stream an important transportation center connecting Buffalo to Rochester and points north. Since then, much development has occurred in what is now Valley Stream including high school education and healthcare services as well as manufacturing jobs in paper products and plastics. In recent years there has been a movement to encourage tourism in what is still a very rural area – with programs such as targeting local restaurants with advertising campaigns specifically for visitors from out of state who are interested in eating local food. There are also plans to build a small park near the high school which would include a playground, Interpretive Center & Museum etc., making it possible for residents to enjoy some peace and quiet while outside activities take place
