Valley Stream is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 11,431 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream was an important early settlement and railroad station on the Erie Canal. It currently has a small river port that served as the original Valley Stream town center. The first gun magazines in Valley Stream were started by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1785. His magazine met with success and soon other gunsmiths followed suit creating what would become known as "the Gun Trade of Valley Stream". In 1825, John Cavanaugh began manufacturing rifles in nearby White Plains and soon became one of the leading riflemakers in America. In 1854, American Armory opened its doors in what is now downtown Valley Stream to serve as a commercial center for firearms production and sales. At this time, there were also several stores located along Main Street which made it easy for customers to purchase guns and ammunition from different manufacturers. From 1854 until 1911, American Armory was home to one of the most famous revolver companies in America - Smith & Wesson - which produced various models of revolvers including those known as "Bulldog" pistols and " Detective" revolvers. As gun magazine production increased throughout the 1920s and 1930s within both American Armory and Smith & Wesson's affiliated companies such as Colt Inc., Ruger Firearms Corporation (now Glock), FN Herstal SA, SIG Sauer AG, etc., valley stream's longstanding reputation as a center for firearm production quickly began to dwindle while corresponding firearm manufacturing plants were established elsewhere across America

Construction on two major bridges over Mohawk Creek began in 1855 and were completed within three years; they remain one of Valley Stream's most visible landmarks today. During World War II, Valley Stream was used to store munitions before they were transported to other locations around New York City or shipped out to warplanes or ships overseas; when it closed its doors for good after the war, it was one of only a few communities in all of upstate New York that did not experience economic growth following World War II. After several rounds of public hearings and revisions to zoning regulations during the late 1990s and 2000s designed to increase commercial development opportunities in near-by Hanover Square shopping mall (now called “Valleystream Village”), residents voted overwhelmingly (92%+) in favor of creating a new village specifically for economic development within their existing town borders – dubbed "Valleystream 2".
