The first settlement in what is now Valley Stream was made on the north side of the stream by John Livingston and his family in 1784. The original name for the stream was "Johnstown". In 1812, William Lyon Mackenzie built a dam across the stream to power his cotton gin near present-day Elmira. The village of Valley Stream was platted in 1834 by Peter Knoppers and others as part of a township plan that would include all of Erie County. The village became an incorporated town on July 1, 1886. In 1954, construction began on the New York State Thruway (I-495), which replaced the old dirt road between Buffalo and Niagara Falls as one route through central New York. The valley formed by Valley Stream Reservoir served as an eastern bypass for I-495 while development took place around it. Today, much of this area remains rural farmland with few urban amenities save for nearby Elmira

Valley Stream is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream was originally called Canandaigua and lay along the Delaware River on the east side of what is now South Street in downtown Valley Stream. The name Canandaigua originated from a Mohawk word meaning "valley of the great waterfalls" and also referred to a location where strong currents flowed between two high peaks in the valley. In 1793, General Israel Putnam built Fort Putnam on land then part of Canandaigua Township on the north bank of the Delaware River opposite modern-day Dunkirk. On July 14, 1794, Putnam's army under Colonel George Washington destroyed Fort Nassau at present-day Easton by bombardment with cannons and small arms fire after an several days siege. In 1802, Albany politician John Armstrong purchased 4 miles (6 km) of riverfront property upstream from present-day Vallelunga for $10 per acre ($). He named it Armstrong Park after himself and donated it to Valley Stream Township in 1805. The first post office was established at Canandaigua in 1814; it closed in 1865. In 1837, Vallelunga requested that Valley Stream be moved from within Erie County to create a more centralized government structure for all its townships; this request was granted but only until 1840 when both Vallelunga and Armstrong Park were again placed within Erie County as part of its new county government form following annexation by Schenectady County from Albany. The first school opened in Valley Stream on September 15,1838; it closed December 12th due to low enrollment which caused local officials to reevaluate their educational needs for future generations as well as budget shortages brought about by Panic of 1857 during American Civil War efforts to finance war efforts without raising taxes which would have done so had they done so constitutionally required by state Constitution Article I Section 10(2). In 1861 Union soldiers burned down Lady Castle School located just south of present-day Schenectadytowns line on what is now Route 24 near North Creek because Confederate sympathizers had been teaching there before Ulysses S Grant's military occupation forces arrived there November 8th fortifying that section during his expedition into upstate New Yorkember 13th against Robert E Lee's Confederate Army after General Grant's victory over them at Gettysburg one week earlier that day west of Philadelphia Pennsylvania thereby ending Confederate control over eastern Maryland and West Virginia including Schenectady County extending into Potomac River District eastward to Anacostia River District northwestward past Frederick Town Line joining LoudounCounty US Army garrisoned facility at Quantico Naval Base nearby while Navy Yard workers constructed USS Monitor (BB 43) moored off Eastern shoreline near Point Lookout National Monument park located offshore Arlington National Cemetery adjacent to naval installation Norfolk Naval Station while other Naval Yards were being built at Richmond Bayou & Beaufort Harbor outside Mobile Alabama & Charleston SC respectively during late 19th century American Civil War era]
