Valley Stream forms part of the eastern border of Westchester County. The first settlers in what is now Valley Stream were farmers who arrived around 1785 with ten families. In 1819, they organized as the Town of Valley Stream and changed their name to Valley Forge when they became aware of an emerging military center near Philadelphia that was also called Valley (meaning "valley"). After Valley Forge's surrender in 1846, most of what is now Westchester County took its name from General George Washington and his army: Yorktown Heights (now Valhalla), Manchester (now Northvale), Scranton (now Hazleton), Bethlehem (now Allentown), Reading (now Lebanon), and Princeton (now Plainsboro). The area that includes present-day Eastchester County was part of Albany County until it was divided between Albany and New York City in 1898. In 1862, residents of what is now Scranton voted to secede from Pennsylvania and form their own country—the Union States of America—in opposition to Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. That year, Union troops burned down part of the town hall while munitions were being unloaded for an upcoming battle against Confederate forces at Gettysburg; as a result, Valley Brook Elementary School closed for three years while new construction took place on nearby Market Street. In 1865, when federal troops surrounded Scranton during the Civil War, many people led by Mayor John Paine left for Canada with supplies before Ulysses S Grant arrived to liberate them two weeks later. When Buffalo Bill Cody came through Pennsylvania in 1886 on his Wild Bunch tour he stayed at a farm nearpresent-day East Ramapo Township and spent time here before touring western New York again in 1890 He returned to Morristown four times over the next few years during which time he killed buffalo there including one particular bull that graces today's Prospect Park across from First National Bank building on Erie Avenue just south of Route 9 outside city limits . After returning home again one summer he started offering shows out there starting June 6th 1890 until October 15th after which time he decided not to come back due to poor health reasons along with other problems caused by game hunting trips undertaken during this period such as getting lost deep inside Indian Territory trying to find sources for animal hides needed for making clothing Horse trading some animals like cows horses pigs etc...
