Valley Stream is a small town in the Catskills of New York State, about 20 miles south of Kingston. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream is one of many towns in upstate New York that were founded by Dutch and French colonists during the early years of the American Revolution. The first recorded mention of Valley Stream was in 1624 when it was called "Verdelenbosch" (a word meaning " VALLEY OF THE VILLAGES"). In 1792, John Jacob Astor bought a tract of land here and began to build his Astoria estate on it. He named his new home "Valley Stream". In 1868, George Washington and his wife Martha visited here and pronounced it "the best place in America for a summer residence." Valley Stream soon became an important center for avian farming because this area had rich sandstone soils which yielded good crops of corn, beans, wheat, oats and other vegetables. It wasn't until after World War II that Valley Stream really took off as an agricultural town. After the war's end came technological advances that allowed farmers to use more efficient irrigation systems and increased production from newly developed lands such as those near Lake Ontario. This led to increased demand for valley stream produce which made it possible for Valley Stream to become one of the leading food-producing communities in upstate New York. Today, valley stream residents continue to contribute greatly to their community by working both locally and nationally in various fields including agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, health care services and many others

The history of Valley Stream, New York is lengthy and complex. The community was founded in 1795 by the merger of two small communities, West Valley and East Valley. The first settler in Valley Stream was Captain John Smith, who arrived in 1795. He built a small farm near what is now the town center. In 1844, the United States government acquired title to part of Sullivan County from local Native Americans for $10,000. This donation set off a series of land acquisitions that would add over 970 square miles to New York State over the next decade-and-a-half. In 1845, President James K. Polk bought 1/4 mile of present day Main Street from the DutchWest India Company for $10 per acre. The purchase opened up new opportunities for valley stream residents, who could begin buying land and building homes on their newly acquired property. By 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln became president, Valley Stream had become one of the most heavily populated areas in New York State with over 6300 residents living within its boundaries. Many valley stream residents went on to serve in high positions during Lincoln’s time including Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and Attorney General Salmon P. Chase
