The history of Valley Stream goes back to 1784 when three brothers founded the town on their farmstead in what is now called Northampton Township. In 1814, Mechanicsville was established nearby and soon became a thriving community. In 1881, when Valley Stream became part of New York State, it had a population of 736. But within only 50 years – due largely to railroads – the population swelled to over 10,000 and has remained steady at that number ever since. Valley Stream began as a fur-trading post and eventually became a steamboat and Canal town because of its proximity to Albany. In 1825, the Erie Canal was completed through this town and increased shipping traffic made Valley Stream an important commercial center for upstateNew York. For many years it was one of the few communities in NewYork with both railroad access and heavy industry; today there are very few industries left in ValleyStream although some housing developments have been built along the canal towpaths between Vallecrest and Northvale since early 2015). The valley formed by what is now Vallecrest Road, present-day Canastota Road, Sunnyside Drive, Old Dutch Path (now US 1), and parts ofpresent-day White Plains Road were inhabited by the Algonquian word "hiawatha" meaning "the great river." It is said that when Europeans first arrived they thought that this valley had nothing but waterfalls because there were no rivers or streams in it. One possible explanation for how such a large valley could be so devoid of water resources is that over time as more groundwater was removed from under mountain ranges west of Lake Ontario (by glaciers during their retreat), more water pooled at lower elevations resulting in less available surface acreage for inflows into Lakes Erie and Niagara; however, until around 1850 any new surface land withinabout twenty miles (30 kilometers) of any major city would be developed primarily as farming or manufacturing sites due to transportation costs associated with getting goods into those big cities across long distancesandevelopment premiums typical among Yankees at the time
