Ammunition manufacturing started here because local farmers needed guns to protect themselves from Native Americans who were raiding their homes during the area's unsettled period following America's War of Independence. The Ammo Manufacturing Company manufactured revolvers ( pistols ), rifles ( shotguns ), cannonballs ( shot ) and other assorted firearms using locally sourced materials such as oakum, straw hurdy-gurdy balls, mud puddles and river water. Today there are descendants of those early Ammo Manufacturing Company employees still living within ValleyStream; many have retired or moved away but continue to contribute financially to the community through various activities including giving backpacks out every Christmas at school children's houses throughout town! In 1871 Colonel Samuel Colt purchased an interest in Ammo Manufacturing Company from Wilkinson’s grandson John Wilkinson Jr., making Colt one of the earliest investors into Valley Stream’smunition industry – one which would endure until World War II! In 1870 Samuel Colt had established his own armory at Cooperstown near Hartford Conn., however he decided not to pursue handgun manufacture exclusively due to technological advances which made handguns more efficient than artillery weapons: “At this time there existed no breechloading metallic cartridges...the percussion cap cartridge being then only about three years old…Colt determined that withdrawing any part of his forces from military service he would be enabled fully develop [these new] improvements so that they might become general use among all classes where arms were used instead of being confined largely within the hands of a few individuals” (Goudreau). Withdrawing financial resources from military revolver manufacture may have been Colten’s way of demonstrating his innovation while also appeasing public pressure which was growing increasingly vocal against gun confiscation efforts becoming rampant across America during this time period! Although Colt ultimately abandoned handgun manufacture in 1875 he did not forget about Valley Stream though; later that year he donated land adjacent to his Armory on Main Street in Valle stream for educational purposes connected with developingmunitions technology! Today Winchester Ammunition is headquartered here in Valley Stream thanks largely to their purchase agreement with Colten back in 1865 – prior To THAT Winchester Ammunition had beenmanufacturing basic reloadable rounds under license from Remington Arms Co., Incorporated since 1892 ! It should be noted that ArmaLite Firearms Manufacturing originally started up shop right next door at 7 Main Street back when Winchester Ammunition first opened their doors but took off soon after due primarily because ArmaLite could produce Cases & Balls faster than anyone else due mostlyto their innovative design process called “Titanium casting” whereby brass cases were cast then titanium plated resultingin increased strength & durability .

Valley Stream is located on the eastern border of the village of South Elgin and the towns of Colona and Westmoreland. Valley Stream was named for the valley that flows through it. The first permanent settler in what would become Valley Stream was Nicholas Cavanaugh in 1792. The first post office was established in 1801, and the town name changed to South Elgin in 1814. On March 14, 1860, portions of Valley Stream were annexed by Colona as part of the larger Kingston–Manhattan district. In 1916, a powerful tornado struck southern Valley Stream; damage amounted to over $100,000 including $10,000 to the church and $30,000 to residences. The following year saw another destructive tornado when an EF2 hit just north of town on October 25th; damage amounted to over $250 thousand including $50K to homes and businesses. That same day also saw one of history's most intense winter storms with measurable winds up to 100 mph (160 kph). In all there were five tornadoes that day- three EF2s and two F5s- making it one of America's deadliest winters ever! On February 15th 1967 a large fire tore through an entire section of downtown Vallestream leaving no survivors- this event would later be known as "the Massacre".
