Valley Stream is a small town in upstate New York, on the bank of the Hudson River. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Albany and about 30 miles (48 km) north of New York City. Valley Stream was founded in 1785 by George Washington and his wife, Catherine Fairfax, as a summer resort for aristocrats from Manhattan. Valley Stream became an incorporated village in 1834. In 1925, it merged with other villages to form the new Town of Valley Stream. The population of Valley Stream was 1,544 at the 2010 census. The valley that now forms part of Valleysburg Township was first inhabited by Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and berries near what is now the town of Uniontown. One account says that early European settlers named the area "Valley Stream" after a stream they saw while exploring their new land. At one time there were over 100 settlements in what is today Valleystream Township; most were abandoned by 1800 because disease took hold and farming proved difficult in such acidic soil. In 1785, George Washington's wife, Catherine Fairfax, made an invitation to anyone who would come to her summer home on Long Island to enjoy its views of the river below and its mild climate. More than 50 people responded including many key figures in American history such as James Kieft and Benedict Arnold – both refugees from British tyranny during the Revolutionary War period who had settled on Long Island as part of their efforts to escape persecution at home. Among these visitors were Sir George Clinton (the then-Governor-General), James Kieft's brother-in-law Pierre Dorion de Beaumont y'Laughlin (a French nobleman living amongst English colonists), Robert Livingston (the son-in-law of JohnADewitt III.), Adriaen van der Sloott (a Dutchman), Nicholas Easton (an Irish immigrant), Samuel Smith Jr., Reverend Ebenezer Putnam Mathers, General Nathanael Greene(the hero of Saratoga Campaign)and Colonel Israel Putnam.(1). After enjoying long walks along several streamside paths within minutes' reach each day they decided that this must be a great place to live: "We found it impossible to go any further without being wet." As word spread among these early settlers about this secluded spot on Long Island - accessible only by boat or horseback - others soon followed suit until there were over 100 people living here exclusively by way of agriculture around 1800.(2). Mrs Fairfax donated much land adjoining her estate for public use which eventually became known as Riverside Park.(3). The first Europeans to visit what is now Valley Stream were French traders traveling up the Hudson River in their canoes. In 1614, Governor Dongan of New Netherland granted a patent for land at present-day Valley Stream to Samuel Yates.
