The Utica Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. was formed on February 14th, 1903 as the first such group in Utica, New York. The club’s purpose was to promote hunting and shooting sports in the town and to provide safety for those who engaged in these activities. In 1912, they became affiliated with the American National Rifle Association (ANRA), which helped grow their membership. In 1923, they moved into their current location on Elm Street inUtica. In 1916, the Utica Rifle & Pistol Club began offering free night classes for rifle aficionados of all levels. This program continued until 1951 when it merged with the Utica NRA chapter to form the present-day Utica Chapter of the NRA. From its inception until today, UTICA has been a leader in providing safe outdoor recreation opportunities for all individuals regardless of age or experience level. On October 16th, 1934, President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9396 which called for an increase in gun control measures followingthe stock market crash that year. As a result of this order, handguns were banned from being possessed by civilians within ten miles of any government building! The Utica Rifle & Pistol Club responded immediately by beginning registration for new memberships at their facility! Utica is a city in the U.S. state of New York, and the seat of Oneida County. The population was 27,564 at the 2010 census, making Utica the seventh-largest city in New York State and its second-most populous municipality after Buffalo. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in New York City; according to2010 American Community Survey estimates, over 25% of Utica's residents identify as Native American or Alaskan Native. In spite of this diversity, Utica is still an overwhelmingly white city with very few black or Hispanic residents. The original town site that became Utica was laid out by George Canning in 1785 for Loyalist soldiers who had fought for Britain during the Revolutionary War. Canning named his new town after himself, which led to some confusion since both he and his namesake were British nationals who had fled America prior to the war. The first permanent settler in what would become Utica was Job Trumbull, who arrived in 1786 and founded nearby Auburnburgh (now part of Schenectady). By 1800, there were 11 villages located within present-day Utica: Canandaigua (dated back to 1624), Auburnburgh (1786–1801), Ashtabula (1789), Batavia (1793–1800), Genesee (1802–1804), Harlem Heights (1810–1811), Hookerstown (1812) and White Plains (date unknown). In 1814, then-Governor John Stevens decided that an untested route proposed by Colonel Timothy Dwight connecting Niagara Falls with Albany should be tested on the Hudson River instead; this resulted in successful navigation efforts that made possible such important trade routes as transportation from Lake Erie to Manhattan and down into Pennsylvania. With these new discoveries came increased development opportunities for settlers: small villages started to grow up around transportation hubs like Syracuse and Rochester while mills began production near Niagara Falls. By 1821, when Putnam County was created from parts of Monroe County east of Fort Orange – including what would becomeUtica –UtICA's population totaled 24 families! Utica, New York is a small city in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. It is the county seat of Clinton County and lies on the border of Utica and Oneida Counties. The population was 7,953 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Utica were fur traders from Canada in 1712 who named it "Ontario." In 1814, General US War 1 Reserve officer James Wilkinson arrived with his regiment to garrison Fort Niagara on the south side of Lake Ontario. Wilkinson recommended that the fort be renamed Utica after himself and his Regiment's commander, Colonel James Otis. The town was laid out by George Stephenson in 1825 as a commercial center for northwest New York City. The Erie Canal was completed through Utica in 1825 and this led to increased political and economic activity around town. The canal opened up new markets for goods coming into town from all over New York State, including Buffalo and Rochester. In 1830, John Smithson founded Smithson Brothers Copper Mines near what is now Carbondale in southern Oneida County. This mining company became one of the largest copper producers in America during the 19th century; during its heyday (1870-1920), Smithson Bros mined more than 2 million tons of copper a year out of its mines northeast of Utica alone! Mining methods then changed so much that even large bodies of water like Haverstraw Bay cannot extract all their metal content from land - today some rare earth resources are still found near Utica! After two years as Ulysses S Grant's private secretary (1865-68), Edward EverettHopper served as Ulysses S Grant's newly elected Vice President (Ulysses S Grant had been impeached). As Vice President he traveled throughout America studying public opinion before taking office on March 4th, 1868 – making him only the second man ever to hold both high government offices simultaneously (the others being Andrew Johnson)! Under Hopper's watchful eye, Reconstruction began in America following Civil War; this process eventually led to African American access to education and jobs across America starting with Reconstruction Era schools such as Tuskegee Airmen Academy located just east of Utica! During World War I veteran Benjamin Banneker establishedBanneker Electric Lighting Company which became one of America's first major producers/exporters Of electric lighting products! Today Banneker Electric Lighting products are used world wide especially by hospitals etc., thanks mostly to advances made since their invention! In 1924 local paper manufacturer Erskine Caldwell started producing syndicated newspapers called "The Times-Union". They remain one of NY’s most successful newspaper publishersToday!"
