On October 6, 1918, the first U.S. military expansion mount was created during World War I when the cavalryman's saddle became available as a mount for service animals. It was designated "M4" and was designed to allow horses to be attached directly to infantry rifles in order to increase their firepower. In 1944, the Mamiya R-Type enlargement system became available which allowed equipment on mounts such as these to be enlarged up to 4x magnification for improved shooting accuracy at longer range. Utica, New York is a city in central New York State and the county seat of Utica County. The population was 146,815 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in Upstate New York. The first Europeans to visit Utica were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624 as part of an effort to settle what is now upstate New York. In 1764, the English established a trading post on the site of present-day Utica; it became an important center for trade with Canada and Europe. The town was renamed Utica after General George Washington's victory over British forces at Ford’s Bridge during the American Revolutionary War in 1775. After years of growth, Utica lost its commercial edge and declined into obscurity until around 1900 when it began to experience a period of revival as a bedroom community for Syracuse. In recent years, however, both UtICA's economic opportunities and its political stability have been slipping as suburbanization has begun to take hold in downtown Utica while littleelse has happened to revitalize the core area since 2000. Utica is located on or near three major watercourses: Mohawk River, Cayuga Lake, and Niagara Falls—making it easily accessible by public transportation and making it an ideal location for industry and commerce. Its natural resources include copper ore, lead ore, coal (both local black coal and anthracite), iron ore (from Cornwall iron works), limestone (from quarries near Rome), steel (steel mills based in Buffalo) and other minerals necessary for everyday life. As well as being home to several universities—including SUNY Empire State University—UtICA has become a center for artisanship as well as business development within Upstate New York; many small businesses are headquartered here because they can access quality materials at low cost or no production costs whatsoever. The history of Utica begins with Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624 seeking land westward along what is now known as I-787 from French traders operating outposts on Long Island Sound. By 1647 there were about 100 Dutch settlers living in what would become Utica; by 1660 there were more than 200 erected homes along Mohawk River Road which led from Albany downriver past present-day Rochester before turning northwest towards modern day Syracuse; also part of this early settlement were two churches: First Presbyterian Church built c1650–51 on West Main Street (now Benefit Avenue) opposite Otter Creek Baptist Church later attached thereto by reformationers moved across Fulton Street from Clarendon Village south side beside Lockport Canal east side between today’s Clinton Street east side between Second Avenue Northbridge Boulevard Southbridge Drive bridge across Erie Canal north side).
