Trade with Europe improved relations between New Netherland and England. In 1624, Dutch settlers arrived at Fort Orange on Governors Island; they built a fort which became known as "Nieuw Amsterdam". In 1664, English colonists landed at Saybrook Heights on Hudson River opposite present-day Rochester; they named their new settlement "New Netherland". The Dutch renamed it "Utica" for their leader Hendrick Van Rensselaer. A duelling party led by French Huguenot trader Nicholas Day chartered a boat called Adventure and set out for Utica on July 15, 1685. Heading upriver along present-day Route 592 - then an Indian trail - he encountered a band of five hundred Iroquois people who had been living near Lake Ontario under Hudsons Bay Company control since 1684. They surrendered without resistance when Day offered them goods such as food and clothing in exchange for information about British settlements on Long Island Sound. The long journey across open country received little attention from European observers until after his return trip two days later when he reported seeing several small villages situated around or within easy striking distance of Albany (present-day Albany).
