Utica, New York is a city in the U.S. state of New York and the seat of Chenango County. The population was 753 at the 2010 census, down from 814 at the 2000 census. Utica is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Utica were Native Americans who hunted and fished in nearby Lake Ontario. European settlement began with Father Marquette's Expedition in 1624 when he journeyed upriver to find a route to Quebec City through Canada. By 1785, Utica had become an important trading post on the Genesee River system between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. With its strategic location, Utica became a center of commerce and education throughout much of 18th century America; it also served as a refuge for Loyalists during the American Revolution. In 1802, John Cushing established himself as an agriculturalist in what is today Utica with land he purchased from local Iroquois Indians; his farmstead remains one of central Utica's famed landmarks today. In 1809, Erie Canal construction begins and soonUtica becomes an important shipping point on this new transportation network; its canal still serves as one of North America's most traveled waterways well into the 21st century. During World War II, UtICA was home to many military installations including Fort George Marshall (now Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson), which played a critical role in guiding Allied forces across Europe during Operation Overlord; also located here were two subordinate airfields used by fighter pilots training for RAF Bomber Command operations over Europe: Operations Neptune and Vengeance; both airstrips are now open to the public as Visitor Centers operated by Memorial Park Districts adjacent to their respective bases (see Listing below). In 1951, after years of discussion and negotiation led by Mayor Holland, Govan merged with Syracuse University creating SUNY Polytechnic Institute – later renamed State University atsituated east of downtown – making Utica one of only two cities (the other being Rochester) in New York State solely controlled by a university system (the other being Albany!).
