As Utica, New York grew in population and economic importance during the late 1800s, it became one of the most important industrial cities in the United States. In 1892, Utica Mayor A.M. Caldwell established a city hall and schools district that included six school districts: the Roman Catholic Diocese ofUtica-Fayetteville; the Protestant Episcopal Church of Rochester; the Methodist Episcopal Church of Utica-Niagara Falls; the Congregationalist Churches of Northern Ontario; and Unitarian Universalist Churches in Clinton and Wayne counties. The new city hall was built on what is now First Avenue between Main Street and Railroad Avenue. The primary industry at that time was agriculture, with a few manufacturing jobs being added over time as technology improved. However, by 1910 there were more than 1,500 businesses in Utica employing over 50 percent of its workforce. The early years of Utica’s growth were difficult due to competition from other growing industrial cities such as Buffalo and Syracuse. However, with perseverance from Mayor Caldwell and hard work from many people within the community, UtICA slowly began to gain an edge over its rivals. In 1861 during the American Civil War Utica supported Confederate forces against Union troops under Major General Ulysses S Grant who had taken control of much of Upstate New York following Battle Of Gettysburg where Union forces were forced to retreat through Clinton County into western Ontario Territory then Canada

Utica is a city in the Capital District of New York State and the seat of Orange County. It is located on Utica Bay, at the mouth of the Genesee River. The population was 115,731 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what would become Utica were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew aboard their ship La Niña in 1524; they named it Niohkononnawa for an island near by. In 1784, John Sloop Endicott discovered oil on Long Island Sound and brought production to Utica from that point forward. In 1825, John Fritchey opened a wharf here to import agricultural goods from Canada. In 1827, Captain James Ketchum built a small fort here with artillery designed to protect Utica against pirates during the American War of Independence (1812-1815). On July 12, 1827, Ketchum's fort was destroyed by a pirate attack led by Nicholas Biddle; he was subsequently hanged for his role in this raid. In 1829, David Hale began operating two gristmills here; one mill produced flour while the other ground cornmeal into meal. In 1830-1930s, Utica also became known as "The breadbasket of New York." A large bakery complex called Post House Square developed nearby in the 1840s and 1850s; it was demolished in 1936 but its warehouse still stands today as part of Freedom Park. On December 20th 1861, Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Buffalo Niagara Station during his campaign against Confederate General Robert Ewell Sr.; he drove south through Utica before arriving at Albany on December 22nd. One day after reaching Albany he ordered Major General Alfred Terry to march upriver towards Syracuse before turning northeast towards Schenectady; this order failed because Terry delayed too long getting underway downstream from Buffalo Niagara Station! On January 1st 1862 Union General Edwin Stanton arrived at Buffalo Niagara Station en route to lead Sherman's army cross overland towards Atlanta; however due to ice conditions along the river he had no choice but to turn back about halfway across Lake Erie! When Stanton finally reached Syracuse on January 5th he found that Terry had already crossed overland and marched northwards instead! On February 25th 1865 Union General Ambrose Burnside arrived at Buffalo Niagara Station en route to take control of all remaining rebel forces around Fort Drum; however upon arrival he found that there were only about 10 men available for duty – thus Burnside decided not to attempt an assault despite being outnumbered five times! Instead he set up camp within sight of Fort Drum until reinforcements could be sent downriver... which never happened! As a result, on March 2nd Garrison troops under Lieutenant Colonel William Ransom attackedFort Drum without orders resulting in more than 50 casualties including Burnside himself!!!
