Utica, New York is a city in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Utica is the second-largest city in Erie County and one of six cities in the county. It is also part of the larger Utica–Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Utica on July 12, 1776 by boat from Fort Niagara with 120 men under James Wolfe. The town was platted on October 20, 1776 by Colonel John Schoolcraft as "New Utica". On November 3, 1777, it became a separate town to avoid confusion with nearby Rome. The first post office was established in Utica on April 14, 1807. In 1825, the state of New York granted land to utICA for its own use; this included parts of present-day Rome and Webster counties. In 1830 there were over 1,000 people living in Utica proper and more than 2200 within a radius of three miles (500 m). By 1840 only about 100 people lived there; however by 1850 that number had increased to 2500 residents and 900 businesses including several mills located along Meeting Street near today's Statehouse Square. In 1851 voters passed a resolution authorizing Mayor Augustus Kelley to erect a public library building which he did so on Main Street between Livingston Avenue and Watertown Avenue east of First National Bank Building (now Rittenhouse Square). This library opened on September 15th 1852 with an estimated 350 volumes or 6% of all books then printed in America.
