Utica, New York is a town in the Utica-Rome borough of New York City. It was first settled by Dutch colonists in the early 17th century and became part of the United States in 1785. The population as of 2010 was 21,226. The name Utica comes from the Onondaga word "utiqua", meaning "place where there is water" or "watercourse". The area now known as Utica was inhabited by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans before Europeans arrived. In 1614, Peter Stuyvesant took over leadership of New Netherland from his father, Hieronymus van Cortlandt. After successfully defending the colony against English attacks for several years, Stuyvesant granted land to three men—Johannes de Rensselaer, Nicholas Teunissen and Abraham De Witt—in 1625 for their own use as trading posts on the southern bank of Mohawk River. The town's first courthouse was built here in 1627. In 1807, Utica became a village when it merged with Rome Township to form Rome Borough. In 1850, it annexed the neighboring town of Rome (then called Graysville) to become Utica-Rome combined government officialdom had grown too large for its original boundaries; that year it divided itself into two separate towns again:Utica and Rome proper. On July 14, 1855,UtICA passed an ordinance creating a fire department effective July 1st following an attack on a theater in downtown Utica which left six people dead and more than 60 injured This event is generally considered to be one of the earliest firefighting efforts in America
