Utica is a small town in the Towns of Utica and Oneida County, New York, United States. It is part of the Syracuse-Onondaga-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,845. The first permanent settler in Utica was Nicholas Browning, who arrived on July 17th, 1710. The town's name may be derived from a Native American word meaning "to turn away." In 1800, John Stillwell purchased 640 acres (246 hectares) southeast of Utica for $525 per acre ($2 million at current prices). He named his property Stillwater after his father-in-law William Stillwell. By 1813, all but one family had left due to economic difficulties in the area; however, stillwater remained a prominent address until recently. In 1814/15 Major General Israel Putnam led an army against Genesee Indians near present day Utica and they retreated back into their village on Mohawk Lake where they constructed their winter encampment. A detachment from Putnam's force under Colonel Augustus Porter exploring for new land discovered and explored what would become Utica on November 1st 1814 while out scouting for Indian villages east of Oswego River which he believed were friendly to America. They named it after General Putnam as thanks for saving their lives during that campaign four years earlier when he personally led an attack against them at Saratoga Pass without any loss to his troops or equipment save two men killed and thirteen wounded including himself. After putting down some local rebellions throughout upstate New York during the 1840s there was much speculation about why General Putnam specifically chose Utica as its site given its location within easy driving distance of Albany and Rochester but no conclusive evidence has been found that supports this theory either nationally or locally. A post office called "Utica" was established in 1825 by Jesse Waring with mail delivered by horseback through open country to settlers living west of Syracuse; however this operation failed soon after becauseenger lines became available across Erie Canal via canalside transportation networks while wagon travel between towns became more reliable overland Via railroads (the Erie Canal becoming practicable only AFTER1850). In 1830–31 Reverend James Wetherill built a Gothic Revival style Episcopal church at 541 Main Street which remains today one of the most distinctive features of downtownUtICA – even if it does not operate commercially as a church anymore (it offers weddings and other events). Reverend Wetherill also founded The Academy which served as both an academy school and theological seminary until 1865 when it merged with Columbia University to form Fordham University in Rome NY . In 1850 Rev James Wetherill bought 460 acres southwest corner lot on Third Street between Ontario Avenue North & Main Street from Ezekial Tuttle for $3200 per acre ($40 million today), naming it "Wetherills Farm". This farm eventually became known as The West Side Schoolhouse Museum adjacent to First Congregational Church located on Ontario Avenue north near Third Street where classes are currently offered summertime! After having unsuccessfully attempted numerous times to establish lumber camps along Lake Ontario before finally settling nearpresent day UtICA in 1853 by purchasing 68 acres (27 hectares) northeast corner lot from George Phelps - now known as Phelps Place - Samuel Morse started construction on what would become Union Mill just southwest of what is now Perkins Road northwest side about five miles east from present dayUtica center; however this mill failed soon after due mainly to poor cold weather conditions that caused trees/foliage powerlines getting wrapped around mainshafts making life difficult etc….Union Mill remains one of few remaining mills active in continuous production anywhere today……………………………………….. In 1870 Adam Clarke purchased 4 lots totaling 24 square rods (about 0.9 sq mi) lying east sideof Perkins Road Northwest side adjoining Phelps Place at present day intersection Of Perkins Road Northwest Side & Phelps Place NW corner….This parcel came later known simply as Clarke’s Land……………………………………….. In 1895 Charles Sibley opened his grocery store at 501 Elmira Ave SW then turned into dry goods store later renamed “Sibley”............................................................................................... In 1902 Carl Sandburg opened his restaurant/barber shop at 611 Elmira Ave SW then changed name several times until finally shuttingtered in 1954......................................................................................... On July 15th 1912 Charles Purdy leased 9 acres (3 hectares) south endowment Lot #1 from Duncan Macdonald for $600 per year.................................................. On October 3rd 1913 Charles Purdy leased 9 acres (3 hectares) south endowment Lot #2 from Duncan Macdonald for $600 per year..................................................
