The merger made Sterling Ammunition Corporation one of the largest American ammunition manufacturers. After World War II, Sterling Ammunition Corporation ceased production of all types of ammunition and focused on providing reloading supplies and training services to gunsmiths. Today, Sterling Ammunition Corporation is a subsidiary of Remington Arms Co., LLC.

The town was originally called Fort Orange after then-Governor Orange's father and namesake, Hendrick Cornelisz van Oranje (1585–1637). In 1795, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington ordered Major General John Sullivan to march his army from Kingston Heights to Albany through Utica and Niagara Falls before crossing into Canada at Seneca Lake. Washington's forces destroyed or captured most of Sullivan's force near what is now Southbridge Road and Chenango Bridge before reaching Albany on November 25th. In 1801, under territorial government under Governor John Stevens (), Utica became a part of Monroe County when that county was created from parts of Westchester and Otsego counties following the Louisiana Purchase Treaty between France and Spain. In 1824,. Governor Clinton granted land north of Genesee Street eastward to James Hickey () for a wharf extending out into Canandaigua Harbor where he built a warehouse used as a jail until 1800 (). Hickey also donated three acres (0.8 km2) along Genesee Street for public use as Market Square (). Utica had its peak population around 1830 when about 12% of all residents lived there; however this decline started soon afterwards due to several factors including increasing competition from other towns in Monroe County over tax revenues generated by manufacturing interests such as canning factories established along Buffalo Bayou (); agricultural production continued to grow despite increasing competition from larger settlements such as Schenectady (); and infrastructure improvements began becoming more common throughout Upstate New York following surveys done during Reconstruction period starting with completion of Erie Canal in 1825 (). After declines during next few decades due mainly to factors listed above (), Utica's population peaked at 27,675 in 1907 with much growth subsequent though suburbanization across western portions of town beginning around 1960 (). Today over 21% of residents live inside its downtown core while most activity takes place outside its boundaries within midtown Manhattan or nearby suburbs
