Troy, New York is a small town in Upstate New York. The population was 5,906 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Hudson River. Troy is named after General and statesman Alexander Hamilton, who grew up nearby. The community began as a Dutch Settlement in 1624 and was known as "Haverstraw" until it became part of Albany in 1714. In 1814, Troy was created as a village when it split from Albany. The village had a total population of 1,391 in 1800 and 2,031 in 1830. The Village of Troy merged with the Town of Troy on February 6, 1898 to form the present-day town of Troy. Troy's history can be traced back to 1624 when Pierre de Montresor established a Dutch Settlement at what is now called “Haverstraw” on the east bank of the Hudson River opposite where modern day Troy stands today. At first there were only some 25 settlers living here including 10 women and 10 children under the leadership of Pieter van der Kieft; who also served as mayor for one year from 1629-30). On October 7th, 1629 while still residing at Haverstraw (now within modern day Schenectady), Van der Kieft wrote: I have bought land along river side for £500 cash which my father did give me….I am going to build myself an house thereon which I shall call “Haverstraw” because that will be my last name before I go into public life etc., etc.; but before I do so my family will move out on account of their health not being able to bear such exposedness any longer…..Howbeit all these things are but dreams or future thoughts at this time and we must take care for our own safety first then think about building another house for ourselves hereafter…..A few weeks later he added: So we dwelt hereabouts until about November 15th when friendly Indians came over against us by way of ambush…………..about December 1st we went back across river and built ourselves another house………heaven knows how long it continued without incident till January 8th next year……………..We met several English traders coming downriver one winter afternoon………………………………………………..On January 9th wee lost our main female trader overboard (it happened near where Hullburgh now stands)……….The English took her scalp……….this made us very angry…………..Aftermath we killed all those English traders that came downriver that winter………….: From this point forward most humans lived close by Indian raids orEnglish trading expeditions leading to increased hostilities between both groups

Troy was a small town in upstate New York, located on the east side of the Hudson River. The population of Troy peaked at around 100,000 in the early 1800s, before slowly declining over time. Today, only a few scattered residences remain in Troy. However, the town's rich history is still well-preserved thanks to its many landmarks and historical events that have taken place there. The first permanent settler in Troy was Nicholas Romanoff who arrived in 1784. Romanoff built a mill on the river and named his settlement after himself – Troy ( pronounced TREE-uh). In 1807, Alexander Hamilton founded an Academy here as part of his push for western education. The town quickly became known as one of the most important cultural centers in Upstate New York during this time period. Troy also played an important role during the American Revolution. In 1779, while stationed here with his brigade under General George Washington, Colonel John Ritchie organized and led a successful attack against Hessian forces near Saratoga Springs – resulting in what is considered to be one of America's earliest military successes. During the Revolutionary War, local militias were key players in suppressing numerous slave rebellions throughout upstate New York. In 1814, when Anthony Wayne invaded Albany County from Canada through Quebec City –Operation Alamo –the Battle ofreek took place near Troy along with other engagements across central New York that day. This event is often cited as being one of America's largest cavalry battles ever fought and helped set off what would become known as the American Civil War; later renamed simply by its original name: The American Civil War (1861-1865). After Reconstruction occurred following Reconstruction era racial violence across America – which began just after Troy had experienced some intense political strife due to its importance during this time period – many African Americans moved into Troy seeking stability and opportunities post-bellum life wasn't always easy or welcoming for them given white supremacy at all levels both locally and nationally/internationally such as racism towards Native Americans/Albany Park natives especially given their close proximity to white settlers who were renowned for their ruthless tactics towards those living below poverty lines called "Yellow Fever" particularly among slaves working on plantations referred to variously as "The Gullahs", "Andalusians" or simply "Slaves". Many black residents left town entirely due to these challenges including future Ulysses S Grant who grew up nearby - eventually becoming Postmaster General under President Abraham Lincoln; resident Lorenzo Webster who cofounded Tuskegee Institute; Drayton McLane Terry Sr., father of current Mayor Jeffery D’Onofrio - all men born outside township limits prior to 1949 when it joined Syracuse citylimits forming Oneida County effective January 1st followingNY statehood proceedings starting with territorial boundaries changed retroactively from Orangeburgh Township eastward within Onondaga County effective December 16th 1860 based on section 4C page 2 lines 8 thru 12 inclusive thereof following advice & suggestions offered thereto by Supervisor Jno Haggerty pursuant thereto dated September 10th 1865 .
