The history of Troy, New York starts with the arrival of European settlers in the area in the early 1600s. The first white settler was John Armstrong, who arrived in 1692. By 1795, there were over 20 Europeans living in Troy. In 1814, Major General Anthony Wayne founded what is now Troy and named it after General Wayne's father-in-law, James Ketchum. In 1827, the town had a population of about 500 people and.]] In 1829-1830, Abraham Lincoln visited Troy and spoke at an event at the courthouse square. Troy became a city on November 3rd, 1830 when it was annexed by New York City. The following year saw heavy fighting between American forces and Native Americans around Battle Creek Ford near present day Troy. On December 15th of that year US troops burned down part of the village of Shawnee to prevent it from surrendering to Indian forces led by Tecumseh King Toryegee (the future Chief Sitting Bull). This action is considered to be one of the largest acts of violence against Native Americans in United States history. On January 1st 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order known as "An Act for Promoting Equality within our Union" which made changes to US Citizenship law including giving women full citizenship rights and making voting opportunities available to many African American citizens who had not achieved suffrage through other channels such as property or political office purchases. On January 6th 1861 Johnson took office as America's 10th president and signed into law "A bill for granting universal suffrage", which would give voting rights to all male citizens over 21 years old regardless of race or ethnicity
Troy, New York is a small town located in Albany County, New York. The population was 7,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-Oneida Metropolitan Area. Troy’s economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing. In addition to Troy, other villages in the town include Altamont and Oak Hill. Troy was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 as an outpost on the east bank of the Ontario River. The first settler named Truro was named after Giovanni Battista della Rovere, 1st Viscount Traversi who had arrived in 1584 from Italy with his father and three brothers as refugees following religious persecution there. The community grew rapidly during the late 18th century because of its strategic location atop high ground overlooking both Scioto and Chemung rivers valley - ideal for shipping grain and other goods to market. By 1800, it had a population of over 1,000 people and became an important stop on stagecoaches travelling between Albany and Buffalo. In 1825, Troy’s post office opened under mail order from Philadelphia under the name “Newburgh Post Office” due to its location near that city’s main commercial center at Broadway and State Street (now First Avenue). In 1827, it became a township; but due to lack of appropriations by state Legislature in 1829–30, it reverted back to a village until 1840 when it became part of newly formed Albany County mandated by state constitution art XI § 6(a). Troy is a town in upstate New York, United States. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Onondaga County, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. Troy was settled by Germans in 1795 and became an incorporated village in 1824. The town was first named after Major General George Washington, however it reverted to its original German name of Trier im Lande (Troy on the land). In 1827, the town changed its name again to Troy after Gen. John Pemberton and his brigade fought against Confederate forces at Battle of Trotter's Ford outside of Troy. After the war, many soldiers from eastern NY settled here and founded businesses such as Jepson Tobacco Company and Phelps Dodge Corporation which remain today. The town has seen some significant growth over the years due to its location near major highways and economic opportunities for businesses within easy commuting distance from Albany and Rochester. As recently as 1990, only 3% of all residents worked in what are now considered high-tech industries such as information technology or biotech; but since then that number has increased to 10%. Recently construction activity along Interstate 4 (Rochester-Albany) has helped spur growth in this area while also drawing attention away from downtown Troy towards more popular destinations like Watertown and Batavia Village. In recent years there have been efforts made by local officials to make sure that cultural attractions like Historic Troy Municipal Hall remain open during these times of budget austerity which seem to be affecting almost every community across Upstate New York following sequestration cuts announced by President Barack Obama earlier this year. With so much going on around them everyday, it can be hard for locals who may not have immediate access toone or more aspects of their culture to feel invested in their history - but with projects like this one being spearheaded by Town Clerk Gwendolyn Wright things are changing for the better!
