Troy, New York is a city in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 717 at the 2010 census, down from 835 at the 2000 census. Troy is located on the Finger Lakes region of central New York and is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. It was founded by French traders in 1784 as Fort Niagara, then called Gansevoort after Nicholas Gansevoort, an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of Parliament from Albany County. The name changed to Troy in 1807 when General Anthony Wayne's army destroyed several forts in what is now upstate New York during his Campaign against Canada. In 1814, Lieutenant Colonel John Jacob Astor purchased 2,500 acres (8 km²) of land nearpresent-day Troy for $10 per acre. The Erie Canal connected Buffalo and Utica with Lake Ontario; however, it did not reach Troy until 1825 because of Native American resistance and gold discoveries along its route northward from Montreal. The first post office was established in Troy on December 11, 1827; it remained open until 1959. This village had a population of 102 people when it became a town on October 15, 1928; it had a population of 524 people by the time it became a city on April 14th, 2010

The town reached its peak during World War II with 2,500 residents working on munitions plants and other war-related activities. However, when the war ended in 1945, Troy's economy collapsed as production from these industries moved away from the area. Today, Troy is a small community consisting of a few hundred people who still use agriculture as their primary source of income. Its biggest attraction are its historical buildings such as the original courthouse which served as part of New York State Supreme Court until 1959 and now houses local government offices; and Judge John Ladds House which is also used as a museum for local history events.
Troy was a small town in upstate New York, located on the southern bank of the Hudson River. It is now a ghost town, and most of its buildings have been demolished.
