In 1865, the Battle of Gettysburg took place within three miles of Troy and it remains one of America's most iconic battles for war or democracy. On July 10th, 1898, a devastating fire destroys part of downtown Troy killing 5 people and injuring 25 more. In 1905, residents of Troy challenge city leaders to come up with a plan to improve transportation options within their community by forming what would become known as the "Troy Committee". This committee would later develop plans for what is now known as Interstate 84 andructions that were implemented throughout much of rural Upstate New York during the 1920s and 1930s.
